U.S. Designates Antifa-Related Groups as Terrorist Organizations
The State Department is set to officially label four Antifa-related groups in Europe as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) and Specific Global Terrorists (SDGT), according to recent reports. This action represents the first instance of the U.S. government applying such a designation specifically to an Antifa-related organization, extending a previous domestic terrorism directive to the international scene.
The groups in question, operating primarily in Germany, Italy, and Greece, are accused of orchestrating bombings, shootings, and other politically motivated attacks. If designated, U.S. financial institutions would be required to freeze the assets of these organizations, and their members would be prohibited from entering the U.S. This escalation would enable criminal prosecution for those who provide material support to these groups.
Antifa Ost and Other Groups
Among the groups, Antifa Ost, a leftist organization, has been implicated in violent incidents in Germany between 2018 and 2023, leading to the indictment of seven of its associates. Additionally, the Hungarian government previously designated the same group as a terrorist organization following assaults involving hammers and pepper spray in Budapest in 2023.
Another group, the International Revolutionary Front, also known as the Unofficial Anarchist Federation, includes various Italy-based organizations advocating for armed conflict against the state. Over the past two decades, this group has participated in numerous violent acts, including letter bombs and mass shootings, notably killing a nuclear engineering executive in 2012.
Moreover, two Greek groups—Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense—have been responsible for attacks on government buildings, including a bombing of the Greek Railways headquarters in April, which they dedicated to “the Palestinian people and their heroic resistance.”
Tommy Piggott, Chief Deputy Spokesman, stated, “Anarchist, Marxist, and Antifa violent extremists have waged campaigns of terror across the United States and the Western world for decades.”
The announcement of this designation is unusual, as far-left extremist organizations are typically regarded by European governments as domestic threats rather than international terrorist entities. However, it reflects a broader U.S. stance seeking to identify and dismantle networks perceived as undermining the foundations of the nation and Western civilization.
Senator Eric Schmidt of Missouri expressed his support for the designation, appreciating the collaborative efforts of Secretary Rubio and the Trump Administration in addressing political violence globally.
