Two Ukrainian ministers resign during a $100 million corruption investigation

Ukrainian Officials Resign Amid Corruption Investigation

On Wednesday, two high-ranking officials in Ukraine announced their resignations following allegations of a corruption scheme involving a hefty $100 million kickback linked to Energoatom, the state-owned nuclear power company. Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko confirmed on X that both Justice Minister Herman Khrushchenko and Energy Minister Svitlana Grinchuk stepped down as part of the unfolding investigation.

Sviridenko also mentioned that the Cabinet proposed personal sanctions targeting Timur Mindich, a former business associate of President Volodymyr Zelensky, alongside businessman Alexander Tsukerman. In connection with the investigation, several senior officials at Energoatom have already been suspended.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) led a 15-month investigation dubbed “Midas,” which exposed a significant corruption network impacting strategic state enterprises. NABU indicated that this group received illegal benefits amounting to 10% to 15% of contract values from Energoatom’s contractors, who felt coerced into paying these rebates to maintain their supplier status.

This corruption scheme allegedly involved a “laundry” office in Kyiv, associated with the family of Andriy Derkach, a former Ukrainian lawmaker now serving as a Russian senator. Reports suggest that around $100 million was laundered through companies not based in Ukraine, with five arrests made and additional charges filed against seven individuals, including a past advisor to the energy minister.

The situation develops as Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leading to frequent power outages. Lawmaker Oleksandr Merezhko expressed concerns that this scandal could undermine internal unity and stability within Ukraine, also noting its potential impact on foreign relations and aid.

In a recent statement, President Zelensky expressed his support for the anti-corruption investigation, emphasizing that such behavior is particularly unacceptable given the current struggles faced by the Ukrainian people. He remarked on the challenges everyone is enduring and pointed out that even amidst these adversities, there should be no tolerance for wrongdoing.

As tensions rise, the focus remains on the efforts to uphold accountability and protect Ukraine’s interests during these challenging times.
