'Behind Closed Doors, We Were Talking’: JD Vance Shares Democrats' True Views on the Far Left During the Shutdown

Vance Discusses Government Shutdown and Democratic Dynamics

On Thursday, Vice President J.D. Vance shared insights with Fox News’ Sean Hannity about his discussions with Democrats during the recent 43-day government shutdown, suggesting that many were “held hostage” by the far left within their party.

President Donald Trump ended the shutdown on Wednesday night by signing a Continuing Resolution (CR). This resolution passed after several Senate Democrats broke ranks with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who had previously blocked the bill 14 times in recent weeks. Hannity inquired whether Vance had been engaging with Democrats behind the scenes throughout the conflict.

“Absolutely. We’ve had conversations quite often, and frankly, I think many Democrats understand that the extreme views from the far left are quite out there. They feel like they’re a bit trapped,” Vance said during the show.

He went on to comment on Schumer, indicating that the Senate leader might have jeopardized his career while being one of the key figures attempting to halt the government shutdown.

Following the resolution to end the shutdown, some Democratic officials and organizations began calling for Schumer’s ousting as Senate leader. Despite this, the New York Democratic Party did not support the CR that Trump signed. Schumer consistently sought to maintain his caucus’s resistance regarding the expiration of Obamacare subsidies.

“The far left will never feel satisfied unless Democrats are willing to completely dismantle the system. Thankfully, a few moderate Democrats put reason first,” Vance noted.

He described some Democrats’ demands during the shutdown as “insane,” citing requests for $1.5 trillion, much of which would fund medical benefits for undocumented immigrants. “They wanted to reverse the solid border policies we’ve established. It was essentially a bid to prioritize their far-left agenda over any reasonable compromise,” he remarked.

Vance pointed out the absurdity of some Democratic positions, mentioning that they used the plight of families wanting to fly home for Thanksgiving as leverage during negotiations. “It’s just unbelievable that they would take such a stance,” he said.

When asked if the government would resume normal operations soon, Vance admitted that it might take some time. He noted that Trump chose to sign the CR late Wednesday to expedite the reopening of the government.

“This indicates that the president and his administration have been committed to revitalizing the government and ensuring essential services are funded for the American people. In contrast, the Democrats seemed focused on holding the government hostage over issues like providing medical benefits to illegal immigrants,” Vance concluded, highlighting what he saw as a stark difference in priorities.
