Operation Southern Spear Launched to Combat Narco-Terrorism
On Thursday, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth unveiled Operation Southern Spear, a mission aimed at tackling narco-terrorism networks across Latin America. Hegseth shared details via social media, stating that U.S. Southern Command and Joint Task Force Southern Spear will spearhead efforts to safeguard the homeland and disrupt drug trafficking operations throughout the Western Hemisphere.
“This mission focuses on protecting our homeland, eliminating narco-terrorists, and shielding our nation from drugs that harm our communities,” Hegseth remarked.
In a recent update, Pentagon officials revealed that the U.S. conducted its 20th airstrike targeting a suspected drug vessel earlier this week.
The U.S. forces also carried out operations in the Caribbean, reportedly resulting in the deaths of four individuals linked to narco-terrorism.
The Navy highlighted that Operation Southern Spear will involve advanced technology, including robotic surface ships, small interceptors, and aerial drones, led by the U.S. 4th Fleet and Southern Command. This is all part of the broader strategy to enhance anti-drug operations.
Further, the U.S. is deploying the USS Gerald R. Ford, noted as the world’s largest aircraft carrier, to assist in these missions in Latin America.
Recently, there have been discussions regarding potential actions in Venezuela, with President Trump reportedly briefed on various military options. While no definitive plans are in place, Democratic leaders have shown a willingness to support strikes against drug trafficking in the region.
Senator Mark Warner, a prominent Democrat, expressed that the current administration has not done enough after the Venezuelan public’s decision to remove Maduro. “The Western Hemisphere is America’s neighborhood, and we will protect it,” Hegseth concluded.
