Reflections on a High-Profile Divorce
Alex Rodriguez and his former wife, Cynthia Scurtis, have opened up about their regrets surrounding their 2008 divorce and his rumored fling with Madonna.
In a recent episode of HBO’s docuseries “Alex vs ARod,” Scurtis discussed Rodriguez’s past infidelities, indicating that the situation involving Madonna was particularly damaging for her.
“He seemed really remorseful and not proud of what he did,” Scurtis, who is now 52, mentioned as headlines resurfaced about Rodriguez frequenting strip clubs and partying with other women during their marriage.
“We were together for about a year, and then when Ella was born, a similar scenario unfolded, leading to our divorce,” she shared.
While Scurtis didn’t go into details or name anyone specifically, she recalled the media buzz around the time that suggested Rodriguez and Madonna, who was married to Guy Ritchie back then, were more than just friends.
The couple’s first daughter, Natasha, was born in November 2004.
Allegations of Rodriguez cheating on Scurtis surfaced in 2007, when he was seen with an unidentified woman in Toronto.
“In retrospect, I could have been a better husband. I could have been more present, more loyal, more sympathetic,” Rodriguez reflected.
Scurtis filed for divorce in 2008 after six years together, citing multiple affairs and emotional abandonment by Rodriguez.
Her lawyer claimed that Rodriguez’s supposed “emotional affair” with Madonna was a tipping point. Rodriguez, however, dismissed the Madonna rumors, saying he found them “ridiculous” and that humor was necessary in such situations.
Madonna’s representative denied the allegations, mentioning that both she and Rodriguez shared the same manager at that time.
On the docuseries, Scurtis noted that Rodriguez’s “personal demons” impacted their relationship. She mentioned hoping he would seek help and expressed a desire for a different outcome.
“He was really upset about the divorce, which influenced my feelings, but it also gave me a sense of freedom,” she admitted.
Rodriguez, while acknowledging the media’s portrayal of him, emphasized that he didn’t always trust what he read. He reflected on their marriage, saying, “It’s not that we were unhappy, but romantically, we grew distant. Marriage is tough.”
As for Rodriguez now, he’s in a relationship with fitness entrepreneur Jaclyn Cordeiro, which he announced publicly two months after they began dating in October 2022.
