Republicans Show More Friendship Across Party Lines, Poll Suggests
A recent NBC News poll indicates that Republicans tend to have a higher approval rating compared to Democrats regarding friendships with those from opposing parties. The poll, released on Friday, reveals some interesting statistics about political relationships in the U.S.
According to the public opinion survey, over 82% of Republicans reported having at least one “close” friend who identifies as a Democrat. In contrast, 64% of Democratic supporters claimed they had a close friend among opponents. It’s kind of intriguing to see these numbers, right?
The survey also highlighted that 87% of moderate Republicans reported friendships with Democrats, alongside 79% of conservative Republicans. On the flip side, 78% of moderate Democrats acknowledged having a close friend in the Republican Party, but that number dropped to 57% for those identifying as liberal Democrats.
Interestingly, among “core” Republicans, 77% said they had a close friend who is a Democrat, while 90% of “soft” Republicans felt the same. For Democrats, 57% of core supporters reported having a close friend in the opposing party, compared to 73% among soft Democrats.
In another study by the Pew Research Center, it was found that 46% of Americans lean towards the Republican Party, while 45% lean toward the Democrats. The research noted a gender disparity as well—men are about 12 points more likely to affiliate with Republicans, whereas women are 12 points more inclined toward Democratic affiliation.
On a more troubling note, 2023 has seen a spike in political violence, including high-profile assassinations and significant increases in attacks against law enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security reported a staggering 1,000% rise in assaults against Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers this year.
Additionally, a Gallup poll from October revealed that 62% of U.S. adults believe the country could benefit from a third political party, while 30% felt that the current Republican and Democratic parties adequately represent the American populace.
This NBC News poll was conducted from October 24 to 28, involving 1,000 registered voters through phone and online methods. The margin of error stands at plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
