Indivisible Targets Senate Democrats in New Initiative

The left-leaning group Indivisible, known for leading the “No Kings” protests against President Donald Trump, has taken on a significant new task. They’ve set their sights on Senate Democrats who have aligned with Republicans to push for the government’s reopening.

“This isn’t just a Democratic issue anymore; it’s our issue,” Ezra Levin, a co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible, stated in a recent press release. “We’re tired of waiting for Democrats to show some courage. The Democratic Party can’t be weak while authoritarianism looms over us, threatening our communities and democratic values. We’re demanding a change, and we intend to fight for it.”

The organization garnered attention in early 2024 with nationwide protests, most notably during President Trump’s military parade in Washington, D.C., and more recently on October 18, where demonstrators criticized his immigration policies, accusing him of behaving like a monarch.

Indivisible’s efforts are backed by numerous liberal organizations, including the 50501 movement, as well as the No Kings organization.

Democratic Leadership Draws Criticism

Founded in 2017, Indivisible has built a network of grassroots organizations aimed at promoting left-wing candidates and challenging incumbents who support MAGA policies. Notably, the group has received financial backing, including a $3 million, two-year grant from George Soros’ Open Society Foundations. This was meant to enhance their social welfare initiatives.

Seven Senate Democrats, along with independent Senator Angus King, diverged from Schumer’s stance and voted to advance a government overhaul plan. This government shutdown, which began on October 1, has now entered the history books as the longest in U.S. history.

In response to this situation, Indivisible’s co-founders are calling for stronger leadership within the Democratic Party. Leah Greenberg emphasized that to combat authoritarianism effectively, Democrats need to take a stand rather than shy away from confrontation, signaling their commitment to nurture a more proactive opposition party.

Health Care Debate Underpins Shutdown

The shutdown, according to Trump and the Republicans, revolves around a dispute regarding health care benefits for undocumented immigrants, a claim Democrats dispute, pointing to a failure by Republicans to negotiate in good faith.

Recently, the House passed a bill to restore government funding, which was subsequently sent to President Trump, officially ending the lengthy shutdown.

A number of left-leaning lawmakers have expressed disappointment over the Democrats who sided with Republicans. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders labeled the voting outcome a “really bad night.”

Calls for Leadership Changes and New Directions

California Governor Gavin Newsom took to social media to criticize the recent decisions made by Senate leaders, declaring, “This is a surrender,” while echoing sentiments for the need for more robust leadership.

Indivisible and several lawmakers, including Democratic Representative Ro Khanna from California, have aimed their frustrations at Schumer’s leadership during this tumultuous period.

As their largest initiative yet, Indivisible is pushing for Schumer’s resignation as Senate Minority Leader and plans to support candidates willing to adopt a more aggressive stance against the current political climate. The organization is gearing up for the 2026 primaries, tapping into strong sentiments among its supporters who demand a proactive approach from Senate Democrats.

While reaching out for commentary regarding this plan, Indivisible had not provided a response as of the latest updates.

Presidential Continued Support for Government Reopening

In light of ongoing discussions around the Democratic votes, the White House reiterated that Trump has been eager to see the government reopened since the shutdown began. Trump expressed his viewpoint in a recent interview, stating that Democrats had overstepped, believing they could outmaneuver Republicans, only to end up defeated.
