Toledo Fire Department Fires Lieutenant Over Social Media Controversy
The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department has terminated Lt. Jeffrey Schroeder after an investigation concerning his social media activity following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA.
According to officials, the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office conducted a thorough investigation, leading to Schroeder being found guilty of three administrative violations. These were associated with posts that connected Kirk’s beliefs to the events surrounding his September 10 assassination.
In what seemed to be an impulsive reaction before the confirmation of Kirk’s murder, Schroeder remarked on social media, expressing something like, “I wish this guy had been shot better.” He was referencing the suspected assassin, identified as Tyler Robinson, and further stated, “No one will miss him; the discourse would be better without him,” in reference to Kirk.
A screenshot of these posts was shared by Company X, thereafter going viral and igniting significant backlash.
“It is entirely preventable and avoidable without the policies and beliefs of people like Charlie Kirk and his uneducated, hateful brethren,” his post stated.
Moreover, the post continued, “I wish this man was a better person,” emphasizing that “Charlie Kirk brings nothing but hatred and division to society.” He asserted again that no one would miss Kirk, and that public discourse would improve without him.
An internal review by the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department resulted in four specific administrative charges against Schroeder:
- Violating general rules regarding negligence and failure to meet reasonable standards.
- Conduct unbecoming a lieutenant, which could disrupt the department’s operations.
- Breaching the social media policy outlined by the department.
- Violating additional administrative policies related to social media use.
Schroeder was found guilty on the three latter charges and was swiftly dismissed, reflecting the “severity of the violations,” as stated by the fire department.
“This decision underlines our dedication to accountability and our absolute intolerance for conduct that incites violence or damages our department’s reputation,” the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department mentioned.
They further expressed regret over the incident’s impact on community trust, assuring that actions will be taken to avert similar issues in the future. This includes a review of existing policies, enhanced training on professional conduct and social media ethics, and fostering a culture grounded in respect, integrity, and service.
The department emphasized its commitment to serve all community members fairly and professionally, vowing to restore trust and uphold high public service standards.
