Josh Hart’s Stellar Performance Leads Knicks to Victory
Just two days prior, Josh Hart found himself sidelined for the entirety of the fourth quarter. But on Friday, he turned things around, playing the full final period and crucially contributing to the Knicks’ 140-132 win against the Heat at Madison Square Garden.
In an impressive display, Hart achieved a triple-double, tallying 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. This marked the 16th triple-double of his career with the Knicks, putting him in a tie with Richie Guerin for third place in the franchise’s history. Only Walt Frazier, with 23, and Michael Ray Richardson, who had 18, have more.
His role was especially vital as a ball handler in the absence of Jalen Brunson, who was dealing with an ankle sprain. Coach Mike Brown noted, “He was 4-for-4 on 50/50 balls. We won the possession game, and every one of those plays was key. Josh did an incredible job to get that triple-double tonight.”
Previously, Hart had expressed his frustration after not playing in the fourth quarter during the Knicks’ loss to the Magic. However, on Friday, he was a consistent source of energy for the team.
In light of Brunson’s injury, Coach Brown adjusted the starting lineup, replacing him with Miles McBride, who finished with nine points and four assists. Interestingly, Tyler Kolek, typically the backup point guard, didn’t see any action, a reflection of his dwindling minutes since the start of the season.
On another note, Landry Shamet and Jordan Clarkson made history as the first duo from the Knicks to each score over 20 points off the bench since 2021.
In Friday’s game, Brown opted for a more zone-oriented defense than he had throughout the season, commenting, “We struggled to contain them off the dribble. We wanted to mix things up a bit.” He explained that while they had practiced a zone, it wasn’t the specific one they executed that night—it was more of a strategy thrown together on a whim.
Brown took a moment to commend his coaching staff for their support during the game, emphasizing their positive influence on the win. “The attitude of my staff was unbelievable. Chris Jent, Rick Brunson, Brendan O’Connor—everyone played a crucial role in making the right calls for substitutions and offensive strategies,” he said.
