Everything Senate Republicans achieved during the Democrats' unprecedented shutdown

Senate Actions Amid Historic Government Shutdown

Senate Republicans have been moving ahead with President Donald Trump’s initiatives even as Democrats have triggered the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

The shutdown began when Democrats aimed to compel Republicans to discuss funding for Affordable Care Act subsidies, set to expire soon. After a significant 43 days, a group of eight Senate Democrats eventually agreed to support a funding bill alongside Republicans.

Interestingly, the end of the shutdown yielded little for the Democrats—just a commitment from Majority Leader John Thune to consider a vote on ACA subsidies, which, curiously, was put on the table at the very start.

While Democrats expressed their discontent over the shutdown they had initiated, Thune and his Republican colleagues managed to confirm Trump’s nominee and secure a significant win for conservative policies.

Early on in the shutdown, Senate Republicans confirmed 107 of Trump’s nominees with a 51-47 vote along party lines. Eleven federal judges were also approved during this period.

Since Trump’s presidency began in January, the Senate has confirmed a total of 310 candidates for civilian roles, including important cabinet members and judges.

Despite the shutdown, numerous bills that align with Trump’s agenda were passed by the Senate, providing a striking contrast to the Democrats, who remained noticeably inactive.

Additionally, the Senate approved the National Defense Authorization Act, which aims to bolster military capabilities by allocating further funds on top of the previous budget for military equipment like the F-35 and shipbuilding.

This act also suggests changes to streamline the defense acquisition process, potentially removing outdated regulations and simplifying various aspects.
