Disney Channels are Back on YouTube TV After New Agreement Includes ESPN Unlimited

Disney and YouTube TV Reach Agreement

Disney and YouTube TV have wrapped up their 15-day dispute, reinstating Disney’s channels and resolving a significant media standoff. The new deal not only brings back services like ABC and ESPN but also introduces several enhancements for YouTube TV’s 10 million users.

Under the terms of this arrangement, subscribers will gain access to an unlimited tier of ESPN’s new service without any extra charges. Additionally, a bundle offering Disney+ and Hulu will be available within select YouTube packages, along with the inclusion of certain Disney networks in new genre-themed add-ons.

A key issue during the negotiations was the technical aspect of integrating content into the YouTube platform. While discussions about pricing were public, the core debate focused on YouTube’s ability to directly include specific Disney content. According to sources familiar with the negotiations, both parties have agreed to restrict how this content is ingested. While ESPN Unlimited’s offerings will remain within the YouTube TV app, the channel itself will not be part of the larger channel store, raising concerns among programmers about potential impacts on their streaming models moving forward.

“This agreement highlights our ongoing dedication to providing top-tier entertainment while adapting to viewer preferences,” remarked Alan Bergman and Dana Walden, co-chairmen of Disney Entertainment, alongside ESPN’s chairman Jimmy Pitaro in a joint statement.

YouTube TV plans to return Disney programming, including the ability to record via cloud DVR, within the next 24 hours. Timing was crucial here, as the situation almost coincided with the third weekend of college football, which could have affected the Monday Night Football matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the Las Vegas Raiders.

“We’re happy to announce that we’ve come to an agreement with Disney that maintains the value of our service for subscribers and provides flexibility for future offerings,” said a spokesperson for YouTube. “We appreciate our subscribers’ patience and apologize for the confusion during the negotiation process.”
