Vietnam Veteran Defends Home, Injures Intruder
This week, news surfaced regarding the tragic incident where a 79-year-old homeowner in Los Angeles was killed after tackling a naked intruder. The veteran, George Carcock, acted in defense not only of himself but also for the tenants who were in distress.
From his hospital bed, Carcock shared his experience, noting, “I thought, ‘I need to be aggressive,’ so I ran into the house and grabbed a gun.” The event took place early in the morning on November 7 at the Studio City Apartments.
Surveillance footage captured the intruder wandering, clearly in distress, and eventually invading the apartment. Carcock said he felt compelled to act when he heard the screams of a female tenant, stating, “I knew I had to do something.”
Despite his attempts to reason with the intruder, Carcock found himself physically overpowered. The intruder lunged at him, and in the ensuing struggle, Carcock sustained serious injuries, including broken legs.
Realizing the severity of the situation and needing to protect himself, he fired three shots at the assailant. The intruder did not survive the encounter, and Carcock was left critically injured but eventually stabilized after surgery.
Reflecting on the ordeal, he expressed a sense of fulfillment in having protected others. “As terrible as this was, it felt good to know I could help,” he remarked.
On Veterans Day, law enforcement officers visited Carcock at the hospital to express their gratitude for his bravery. His tenant, Chloe Zierak, emotional and grateful, emphasized, “He saved my life. I can’t imagine what might have happened otherwise.”
Zierak recounted how, during the chaos, Carcock remained composed while engaging with the intruder. When asked if his military background informed his reactions, he acknowledged that “the training definitely helped.”
Now, the family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to aid with Carcock’s medical recovery, as he faces a long journey ahead due to the severity of his injuries. His son mentioned the challenges ahead, particularly regarding care for his his wife, who suffers from chronic illness.
“He keeps his head down and takes care of the people around him,” his son shared. “To us, he’s a hero.”
