Oklahoma Stuns Alabama with Narrow Victory
Kip Lewis stood out with seven tackles, including two sacks, as No. 11 Oklahoma pulled off a surprising 23-21 win over No. 4 Alabama on Saturday.
The Sooners (7-2, 4-2 SEC) capitalized on turnovers, scoring 17 points thanks to mistakes by Alabama. They made a crucial stop late in the game, which ended Alabama’s impressive eight-game winning streak overall and their 17-game home streak.
Although the Crimson Tide (8-2, 6-1 SEC) had an opportunity to turn the game around, Ty Simpson’s fourth-down pass intended for Ryan Williams didn’t connect.
Following that, Oklahoma managed to run down the clock, prompting a wild celebration among their fans. Interestingly, they were trailing by six points and racked up only 212 yards of offense, but their defense was key, as they recorded an interception and recovered two fumbles.
Alabama still controls its destiny in the SEC Championship race and could secure a spot with a victory over rival Auburn in the upcoming Iron Bowl.
The Sooners’ defense was impressive, holding Alabama to just 57 yards on their last four possessions, which could be significant in helping Oklahoma secure a playoff spot in the next College Football Playoff rankings.
Quarterback John Mattia contributed 161 total yards (138 through the air) and even scored a rushing touchdown, leading the Oklahoma offense. Simpson, for Alabama, threw for 326 yards, obtaining one touchdown but also throwing an interception, while tight end Josh Cuevas caught a touchdown pass. Daniel Hill found the end zone twice for the Tide.
Before Saturday’s matchup, Alabama had a plus-10 turnover ratio, ranking fourth in the nation and the best in the SEC. However, this time it didn’t translate to success, as Oklahoma managed to score three points against Tennessee the previous week.
Incredibly, Oklahoma has scored just four points over their last seven games, but they have recorded six points in the past two weeks, tallying 37 points due to turnovers.
Despite dominating almost every statistic, Alabama’s array of mistakes proved crucial. They not only committed a turnover but also missed a 36-yard field goal attempt and allowed a 46-yard punt return that led to Oklahoma’s first score.
Observations
Oklahoma State: After a shaky period within the College Football Playoff outlook, Oklahoma State is likely to solidify their spot if they can win their remaining games against Missouri State and LSU.
Alabama: Several weaknesses were revealed, particularly in their running game, offensive line, and special teams play.
Looking Ahead
Next Saturday, Oklahoma will host Missouri. Meanwhile, Alabama will face Eastern Illinois at home.
