Married teacher Elena Bardin given prison sentence for sexually abusing a young inmate at a Kentucky detention facility

A dishonest married teacher who sexually exploited a troubled juvenile at a Kentucky detention facility has been sentenced to over ten years in prison.

Elena Baldin, 27, received a 14-year sentence after a jury found her guilty of first-degree sexual abuse and unlawful transaction with a minor for engaging in sexual conduct with a 17-year-old boy at the Adair County Juvenile Detention Center, where she taught English.

Baldin, who is a mother to a 5-year-old girl, faced additional charges for allegedly soliciting the boy to kill her husband, but the jury acquitted her on that count.

She was taken into custody in April following a routine search of the teenager’s locked room, which revealed approximately 193 sexually explicit letters and images she had shared with him.

During the proceedings, the judge pointed out that Baldin had confessed to having sexual relations with the inmate in one of the letters.

“The letter you sent was very seductive, resembling something from an adult film, and it was undeniably inappropriate. A young person would clearly understand that,” Circuit Judge Samuel Spalding remarked during the sentencing.

He emphasized that as an educator, her role was to exemplify good conduct, yet the extensive correspondence highlighted her intelligence and the calculated nature of her actions.

Baldin’s supervisor had previously warned her to cease communication with the boy, and she had even been reassigned within the facility at one point.

“It appears that rather than heeding that advice, you intensified your actions, which is troubling,” the judge stated.

Authorities clarified that one of the letters indicated that Baldin sought to engage in sexual activities with the boy and suggested he kill her spouse.

The juvenile testified at the trial that he had no real intention of following through with those murder plans, describing their relationship as simply a distraction while he was incarcerated.

Baldin, who did not take the stand during the two-day trial, is required to register as a sex offender for 20 years.
