Georgia threatens Texas' CFP aspirations with decisive victory

Georgia Triumphs Over Texas in Crucial Game

Gunner Stockton threw four touchdown passes, including two to Noah Thomas, leading No. 5 Georgia to a 35-10 win against No. 10 Texas on Saturday night. This victory marked Georgia’s sixth consecutive win, reinforcing their postseason aspirations.

After Texas managed to narrow the gap to 14-10 in the third quarter, Stockton connected with London Humphries for a 30-yard touchdown pass. A successful onside kick regained momentum for the Bulldogs. Following the recovery, Stockton threw a 6-yard scoring pass to Lawson Lackey, effectively sealing the game. He also added a short touchdown run as the match wound down.

With this win, Georgia improved to 9-1 with a 7-1 record in the Southeastern Conference. They are now in a favorable position for a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff, especially after No. 4 Alabama’s 23-21 loss to No. 11 Oklahoma earlier in the day. The Bulldogs also kept their hopes alive for defending their SEC Championship title.

Previously, Georgia had defeated Texas in a season opener and in an overtime thriller during last year’s SEC Championship Game. Saturday’s victory marked their third win over the Longhorns in just two years.

Texas, now at 7-3 and 4-2 in conference play, saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, putting their playoff hopes in a precarious position.

This was Georgia’s first loss since their overtime defeat to Alabama on September 27, which snapped a 33-game home winning streak, the longest active streak in FBS.

In the third quarter, Texas linebacker Anthony Hill intercepted a pass from Stockton, giving the Longhorns great field position at the Georgia 36. A pass interference penalty against Zion Branch allowed Arch Manning to throw a 7-yard touchdown to Ryan Wingo, cutting the Bulldogs’ lead to 14-10.

However, Georgia quickly responded with a 10-play touchdown drive capped by Stockton’s 30-yard pass to Humphries. Key plays included a successful 4th-and-1 conversion and a fortunate offsides penalty against Texas that allowed them to maintain momentum.

Head coach Kirby Smart took a risk by calling for an onside kick, which was successfully recovered by Cash Jones.

Stockton had an impressive outing, completing 24 of 29 passes for 229 yards, with just one interception to his name this season. On the other side, Manning completed 27 of 43 passes for 251 yards, adding one touchdown and one pick.
