Home Alone marks its 35th anniversary: 10 behind-the-scenes secrets from the filming shared

Celebrating the 35th Anniversary of “Home Alone”

“Home Alone” marks its 35th anniversary this year, a beloved Christmas classic that became an immediate success upon its release in November 1990. This film not only catapulted star Macaulay Culkin to fame but also introduced audiences to an unforgettable story.

The plot centers on Kevin McCallister, a young boy who gets left behind when his family goes on vacation in Paris. While they’re away, he hilariously defends his home from two bumbling burglars known as the Wet Bandits.

In honor of the film’s milestone, here are ten behind-the-scenes insights from its production.

The McAllister’s Profession Revealed

Director Chris Columbus recently discussed what the McAllister parents actually did for a living. Interestingly, screenwriter John Hughes had Culkin in mind when writing the script, largely due to the success they had together in the film “Uncle Buck,” where Hughes was impressed by Culkin’s talent.

Columbus recounted the audition process for the role of Kevin. After meeting “hundreds of kids,” he felt Culkin brought a humor and authenticity that was refreshing, as he didn’t fit the typical mold of a “Hollywood kid.”

Culkin’s Iconic Scream

One of the film’s most famous moments almost didn’t occur. Columbus reflected on the now-iconic scene where Kevin slaps shaving cream on his face and screams. The original script didn’t include his hilarious take—Culkin improvised this memorable moment, which ended up becoming the film’s poster image.

Fictional Films within the Film

In a playful twist, Kevin watches a fake gangster movie called “Angel with a Dirty Soul.” In one scene, he proclaims, “Guys, I’m eating junk and watching rubbish!” The comedic movie-within-a-movie was solely created for “Home Alone,” filmed just before the main shoot began.

Buzz’s Girlfriend

Behind the scenes, there was an interesting choice made regarding a joke about Buzz’s girlfriend. Instead of casting an actual girl, they used the son of an art director. Actor Devin Rattray later remarked that it wouldn’t have felt right to portray a girl as merely the butt of a joke.

Box Office Success

The film not only served as a launchpad for Culkin’s career but also achieved monumental success at the box office. Released in late 1990, it dominated for twelve weeks, grossing around $285.7 million in the U.S. alone. For a time, it was the highest-grossing film of 1990 and shifted the landscape of family comedies.

Behind the Scenes: Serious Moments

While filming, tensions sometimes ran high, as seen in a rehearsal where Joe Pesci’s method acting led to Culkin getting bitten, leaving lasting marks. This anecdote reveals the commitment and intensity some actors brought to their roles.

Changing Directorships

Interestingly, Columbus was initially set to direct “Christmas Vacation” but backed out after an uncomfortable meeting with Chevy Chase. Shortly thereafter, he was offered the script for “Home Alone,” which he found much more appealing.

John Candy’s Cameo

John Candy, another comedy legend, had limited time for his role, yet he managed to bring a lot of spontaneous humor, improvising many of his lines while filming in just 24 hours.

Wet Bandits Casting Drama

Lastly, the casting of the Wet Bandits nearly fell through for Daniel Stern, due to scheduling conflicts and the initial decision to replace him. Ultimately, he was invited back, a move he was grateful for upon reflecting on how close he was to missing out on such an iconic role.

What Did the McAllisters Do?

Fans have long debated how the McAllisters could afford such an extravagant trip. Columbus shared that they settled on the idea that the mother was a successful fashion designer, which feels fitting given the family’s affluent lifestyle in the film.

This anniversary is a great reminder of how “Home Alone” continues to entertain new generations, filled with laughs and childhood nostalgia.
