On August 21, Jameis Winston connected with Jarrin Hiatt for a touchdown, a moment that raised hopes for both players as they faced uncertainties in the regular season ahead.
Fast forward eighty-seven days, and with a chance to equalize the score on Sunday, Winston aimed for Hiatt once more. This attempt resulted in an interception at the 14-yard line, effectively sealing a 27-20 defeat against the Packers.
“When some of your teammates aren’t getting enough reps, it’s crucial to seize those moments and put in extra work to find solutions. Timing and execution become vital when the game is on the line,” Winston reflected. “Jarin and I, our timing and execution could have definitely improved.”
Hiatt seemed to alter his route to the end zone just as the ball was being thrown against a Cover-2 defense, which led to Evan Williams intercepting it uncontested with only 36 seconds remaining.
“I have to make a play,” Hiatt acknowledged. “When I turned my head, the ball was already in the air, but ultimately, that falls on me.”
Giants fans, welcome to the Jameis Winston Experience.
After weeks of calls to promote Winston over the game-managing Russ Wilson, the Giants officially made Winston the starter for the first time since Jackson Dart went down with a concussion.
On one hand, Winston successfully led three touchdown drives and ultimately scored a touchdown himself with a 1-yard sneak to put the team ahead 20-19. He helped right guard Greg Van Roten up and high-fived Tyrone Tracy Jr. The ensuing touchdown celebration took so long that all other players had retreated to the sideline, causing worries about a potential delay before the extra point.
“I was going to let him have his moment,” center John Michael Schmitz Jr. quipped, giving Winston his trademark “W.”
In the closing moments, however, Winston fumbled the ball on his last two snaps. Following the interception, the defense forced a punt, giving Winston one last shot with a Hail Mary attempt, which ultimately fell short as he was strip-sacked by Micah Parsons as time ran out.
“I really wanted to win this for them,” Winston said, adding, “We controlled the line of scrimmage and ran the ball well. We had some successes in the passing game. [Interim coach Mike Kafka] did an excellent job preparing us. We were all eager to grab this win.”
Winston has a reputation for targeting expected areas, giving his receivers opportunities to make plays. He completed 19 of 29 passes for 201 yards, converting 3 of 4 fourth downs.
“It was entertaining up until the end, but I thought he made a solid decision,” receiver Wan’Dale Robinson commented, noting he was covered during the interception play. “Everyone has to seize their opportunities when playing with Winston, and you need to put in maximum effort to make those plays.”
