Isaiah Hodgins shines for the Giants as the offense shows many strengths

Giants Fall Short Against Packers

The Giants seemed to have done enough, particularly on the offensive side, to secure a victory against the Packers on Sunday.

They accumulated 142 yards through 38 rushing attempts, with Tyrone Tracy Jr. leading the charge, racking up 88 yards on 19 carries. Devin Singletary also contributed significantly, gaining 44 yards and scoring two touchdowns on 14 carries.

Isaiah Hodgins, a former Giants receiver who rejoined the team from the Steelers’ practice squad just days prior, stood out with five catches for 57 yards.

Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka expressed pride in Hodgins for stepping up on such short notice. “He took on a key role in crucial situations—important fourth downs, third downs, blocking for us. This guy just stepped up,” he noted, clearly pleased with Hodgins’ performance.

Singletary, too, acknowledged the offensive line’s role in creating opportunities for the run game. “The big guys up front were really doing the work. Trace and I just ran. The receivers and tight ends stepped up too, contributing on the tough plays, which was huge for us today,” he mentioned.

Meanwhile, rookie quarterback Jackson Dart was sidelined due to concussion protocols. However, he made an appearance on the field with his teammates before the match. When asked about his potential return for the next game against Detroit, Kafka remained cautious, stating, “I don’t want to jump too far ahead. He’s still in the protocols, so he’ll play when he’s cleared.” He added that if the Giants had scored on their final drive—when they were trailing 27-20—he would have opted for a two-point conversion to win.

On the defensive side, edge rusher Brian Burns had another standout performance, notching two sacks, bringing his total to a career-high 13 for the season. This places him just behind Myles Garrett of Cleveland in the league’s all-time rankings. “It means a lot to me,” Burns commented, a hint of pride in his voice. However, he was missing his defensive linemate Kayvon Thibodeau, who was out with a shoulder injury. “His presence brings a different energy to our defense,” Burns reflected.

Kicking woes plagued both teams, largely due to strong winds. The Packers’ backup kicker Lukas Havrisik missed two extra points while filling in for the injured Brandon McManus. For the Giants, kicker Younghoe Koo also struggled, missing a crucial PAT after a chop block on Austin Schlottman. The retry from 48 yards ended up drifting left, tying the game at 13-13.

In addition to Thibodeau, the Giants were also without starting wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring), safety Tyler Nubin (neck), and defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Rochus (toe).
