Protests Erupt in Charlotte Amid DHS Operation
On Sunday, a wooded area in Charlotte, North Carolina, was filled with the sounds of protest as demonstrators surrounded federal agents involved in Operation Charlotte’s Web. This initiative, led by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), focuses on apprehending individuals with criminal immigration warrants.
According to DHS, they had “deployed law enforcement” to target “criminal illegal aliens who are terrorizing the American public,” as stated by Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, who emphasized the aim of “removing public safety threats and restoring order.”
By Saturday afternoon, furious local residents were shouting things like, “Get those bastards out of my city!” as Border Patrol and Homeland Security personnel moved through the woods to carry out their operations. “F-you! Get out!” one protester yelled, arms waving frantically. Another chimed in with, “Our city, not your city!”
The situation became even more heated when an agent holding a tear gas canister yelled back, “This is tear gas! Stop following us!” In a tense moment, an agent from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) attempted to calm the crowd while filming the chaotic scene with his cellphone.
A female protester questioned, “How do you know it’s illegal before handcuffing you? That’s a violation of the Fourth Amendment!” The agent responded, “Our job here is to protect the people we police. We are bound by what is reasonable under the law.” Yet she continued, “You’re detaining people who sell flowers. They’re family members. That’s not a threat.”
The engagement stretched on for several minutes, with emotions running high before the HSI agent turned away to assist a colleague setting up a drone.
Operation Charlotte’s Web is occurring during a time when the city is facing criticism over escalating violent crime rates. Homicide rates, in particular, have surged—Republican lawmakers have called upon Democratic Governor Josh Stein to deploy the National Guard, though he has so far resisted such requests. Local officials insist that maintaining public safety remains a local duty.
Recently, reports indicated that the homicide rate in Uptown Charlotte had increased by 200% compared to the previous year. In a letter, three Republican members of Congress highlighted the surge, noting that aggravated assaults involving knives and guns rose from 86 in 2024 to 111 in 2025.
Charlotte is a city with a diverse population exceeding 900,000 residents, including over 150,000 foreign-born individuals, according to local sources. As the DHS and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office had not commented on the ongoing situation, the community remains deeply divided over the steps taken in the name of public safety.
