Democrat from Washington cautions against undermining democracy to achieve electoral success

Grusenkamp Perez Critiques Democratic Tactics

Representative Marie Grusenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) expressed strong concerns on Monday about her party’s actions, suggesting they are “destroying democracy” through what she describes as cynical political maneuvers. She emphasized that sidestepping democratic principles won’t safeguard them.

Her remarks came after she called for a censure vote against Illinois Representative Jesús “Chuy” Garcia, who abruptly withdrew from his re-election campaign, allowing his chief of staff to potentially step in as a candidate. This move surprised many.

During a discussion with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Grusenkamp Perez reiterated her belief that Garcia’s actions jeopardize a fair electoral process. It’s noteworthy, she pointed out, for Democrats to publicly criticize one of their own like this.

She feels compelled to take a stand, stating, “Election destruction is wrong, regardless of who does it.” Grusenkamp Perez highlighted the need for transparency and accountability, urging that these values should be consistently upheld rather than ignored for political convenience.

While she was disappointed in Garcia’s seemingly calculated decision, she observed other Democrats commending him for his supposed cleverness. “It’s troubling,” she said, “when the response is praise rather than condemnation. This shouldn’t be a model to follow.”

Grusenkamp Perez warned that bypassing democratic processes harms public trust. “What’s the point of winning elections at all costs if it erodes the integrity of the system?” she pondered. “Winning isn’t worth it if it destroys the very thing you aim to protect.”

Tapper concurred with her assessment, noting that Garcia’s actions left voters in a lurch, unable to choose between him or his successor. He then raised the question of whether past electoral events, like the way Democrats supported Biden while sidelining his primary opponent, might have influenced her stance.

Grusenkamp Perez acknowledged the moral complexity of politics but firmly believes that the obligation to the American people should override party loyalty. She rejected the notion that identity politics could justify undermining electoral integrity, stating, “If it’s wrong, it’s wrong—no matter who perpetrates it.”

When questioned about her call to censure, a spokesperson for Garcia defended his choice, explaining it was driven by personal circumstances, including health issues and family responsibilities following a tragedy in his life. The spokesperson hoped for empathy from colleagues during such challenging times, especially those who advocate for family values.

Garcia’s office has yet to respond to Grusenkamp Perez’s recent comments.
