Cam Newton criticizes the Browns, claims the coach is setting Shedeur Sanders up for failure

Shedeur Sanders’ NFL Debut in Browns’ Loss

Shedeur Sanders made his first appearance in the NFL during the Cleveland Browns’ 23-17 defeat against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. It wasn’t the debut he anticipated.

Sanders finished the game having completed 4 out of 16 passes for 47 yards, with two sacks and one interception. The Ravens clinched the win with a rushing touchdown from tight end Mark Andrews.

After the game, Sanders expressed disappointment in his performance. Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton, speaking on ESPN, mentioned that the game validated his earlier criticism of the team’s approach.

Newton said that he believes Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski doesn’t genuinely want Sanders to succeed. He pointed out the inconsistent quarterback situation in Cleveland, noting that it doesn’t matter who is behind center, as the issues persist—and a high-paid quarterback can complicate things further.

The Browns’ record now stands at 2-8 this season, with Sanders being the third quarterback change since the beginning of the regular season. Initially, Joe Flacco led the offense but was benched in favor of rookie Dillon Gabriel. Following Flacco’s trade to the Bengals, Gabriel became the starter, though he struggled in the game against the Ravens, completing just 7 of 10 passes.

Newton mentioned that Sanders, son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, hasn’t had a fair chance in Cleveland and implied that the situation sets him up for failure.

In a candid postgame conference, Sanders remarked, “I don’t think we played well. There’s a lot to consider going into next week.” He acknowledged that building chemistry with the receivers would take time.

Sanders has remained confident despite the rough outing. As the Browns head into their next game against the Las Vegas Raiders, he looks to continue learning and improving.

Stefanski has yet to announce who will start at quarterback for the upcoming game, but an announcement is expected soon.
