Trump Praises UN Security Council’s Approval of Gaza Rebuilding Plan
On Monday, President Trump expressed his approval of the United Nations Security Council’s decision to back the U.S. initiative aimed at rebuilding Gaza.
The council, which consists of 15 members, passed the resolution with a vote of 13-0, while Russia and China chose to abstain.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump celebrated the decision, saying, “Congratulations to the world on the great vote of the United Nations Security Council.” He claimed this vote would be remembered as “one of the largest recognitions in the history of the United Nations” and herald a historic moment that could pave the way for greater global peace.
The resolution permits the establishment of a United Nations Peace Commission, which Trump announced he would head, to supervise the reconstruction of Gaza, a region heavily impacted by conflict.
He mentioned that details regarding board members and “many more exciting announcements” would be forthcoming in the “coming weeks.” Notably, Trump identified former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the original proponent of the organization, as a possible candidate for its director.
Since the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel has launched numerous assaults in Gaza, resulting in over 69,000 Palestinian casualties, according to local health officials.
The 20-point proposal from the Trump administration, agreed upon by both nations last month, aims to create a peace commission that will steer Gaza towards stability and eventually facilitate the formation of an independent Palestinian state.
Nonetheless, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed his opposition to the notion of a Palestinian state and remains committed to disarming Hamas, which governs Gaza.
In contrast, Hamas has rejected the UN resolution, arguing that it fails to address the “political and humanitarian needs and rights” of the Palestinian people. The organization has also shown no intention of disarming or surrendering its authority in the area.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Walz stated on Monday that the resolution is “another important step towards a stable Gaza that can thrive and a safe environment for Israel to live in.”
He further elaborated, explaining that the Council would oversee humanitarian aid delivery, foster Gaza’s development, and support the Palestinian technocratic committee responsible for the daily operations of Gaza’s civil service while the Palestinian Authority implements its reform agenda.
