Fantasy football: Evaluating whether unexpected Week 11 stars are valuable

NFL Week 11 Highlights

NFL Week 11 was memorable, to say the least. While stars like Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson faced challenges, some unexpected players stepped up in their place.

Jacoby Brissett set a new NFL record for the most completions in a single game, while Bryce Young established a franchise record for the most passing yards for the Panthers. Their contributions played a crucial role in securing wins, alongside standout performances from players like Buccaneers running back Sean Tucker and Seahawks tight end AJ Barner.

As we head into Week 12, many will be eyeing these players on the waiver wire. But the question remains: are they truly worth picking up or just fleeting stars of the moment?

When it comes to fantasy QBs, the landscape is often tricky. Typically, players like Brissett and Young serve as replacements during bye weeks. In standard single QB leagues, it’s likely they won’t break into the top 12. Superflex leagues? Forget about it.

If you’ve got them on your roster, you probably have an idea of how to navigate the situation. Brissett might be a viable option for a start given Arizona’s upcoming matchups, particularly if he faces off against the likes of Trevor Lawrence and Jordan Love. But with Young, consistency is a big concern. We’ve seen enough ups and downs.

On another note, the dearth of reliable running backs has many players eager to add Tucker to their rosters. But hold on a minute. While it’s impressive he rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns against the Bills, can we really expect that kind of performance again? It’s essential not to overlook the fact that Buffalo ranked poorly in run defense.

Tucker’s fit was ideal for that game, especially compared to Rashard White’s usual inefficiencies. Still, high expectations following such a standout game can lead to disappointment.

With Bucky Irving likely returning, both Tucker and White may find themselves relegated to backup roles again. Even if Tucker’s recent performance leads to a few more carries, are you really keen on using him against the Rams, especially considering their top-tier run defense? Probably not.

Similarly, Varner’s rise in targets this past week was noteworthy—11 targets are more than he had in his previous four games! However, he continues to share snaps and targets with rookie Elijah Arroyo, and without having a consistent focus from Sam Darnold, his future prospects may not be bright. Seattle’s next opponents all have strong defenses against tight ends as well.

Final Thoughts for Week 12

It’s easy to get swept away by a player’s standout week. Yet, as we approach Week 12, it’s prudent to remain cautious about buying into these seemingly one-off performances. Save those waiver priorities and FAAB funds for players that show true consistency. That way, you can finish the season on a high note and prep for the playoffs.
