Socialism 'will hurt you': Bill Maher cautions Democrats that the extreme left is guiding the party towards failure

Bill Maher’s Take on Democratic Socialism

Bill Maher has recently voiced strong opinions about the rising democratic socialist movement, suggesting that the Democratic Party needs to pivot toward the center to secure electoral victories.

During a Friday episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” he elaborated on the internal rift within the Democratic Party, highlighting the contrast between those endorsing socialist principles and those advocating for centrist views. He referenced statements made by New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, a self-identified democratic socialist, juxtaposed with comments from Virginia Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, who warned that the party must shift towards the center to avoid fragmentation.

Maher reflected, “So how do we decide who is right?” He noted, “You don’t actually need to flip a coin; the evidence speaks for itself. In 2024, 13 Democrats managed to win in districts that Trump also took.”

He pointed out that these successful Democrats were predominantly moderates, emphasizing that left-leaning think tanks had drawn similar conclusions from recent electoral analyses: “Move to the center,” he reiterated.

Maher went on to characterize the current allure of socialism, especially among Gen Z, as a response to economic struggles they attribute to capitalism. He humorously remarked about the desire to mark personal food items, suggesting that many quietly disengage from capitalism in favor of socialism, though he cautioned, “the problem is, socialism doesn’t work, and it never has.”

Moreover, he expressed skepticism about Mamdani’s ambitions to reshape New York, warning, “If you think New York can somehow reinvent this wheel, you’re in for a rude awakening.” He also distinguished between traditional Democrats and figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, labeling them as “democratic socialists” but insisting that their ideology is fundamentally distinct from mainstream Democratic beliefs.

Maher continued to stress that there is already a significant amount of socialism present in the U.S. through programs like Social Security and Medicare, describing the Democratic Socialists of America as “radicals” advocating extreme positions such as open borders. He criticized the group’s approach to meetings, mentioning their unusual etiquette like “jazz hands” instead of clapping, which he found somewhat absurd.

In a sarcastic tone, he challenged the notion of following Mamdani’s ideas, noting, “While Chuck Schumer isn’t perfect, he’s not going to crumble when faced with the scent of Chanel No. 5.” Maher concluded by discouraging traditional clapping during his shows, adding an element of humor to his critique.
