Student court at Loyola New Orleans reverses SGA decision to ban Turning Point USA chapter

Loyola University Student Court Overturns SGA Decision

Loyola University New Orleans’ student court has reversed a decision made by the Student Government Association (SGA) that denied the new Turning Point USA chapter official status as a campus organization, as revealed by documents acquired by Fox News Digital.

The court’s ruling came after an appeal from the group’s potential members, backed by two supporters from the Loyola New Orleans School of Law.

The SGA is expected to hold another vote about granting credentials to TPUSA, although a date for the vote hasn’t been set yet.

“This is a significant victory for the students at Loyola University New Orleans,” commented Ethan Estis, a law student involved in the appeal. “The court identified a clear deviation from standard protocol in recognizing organizations. I’m truly proud of the Loyola University Turning Point USA leaders who were unwavering and self-assured. Their determination is inspiring. The court made a sound decision here. Onward and upward for these student leaders and all students wanting their voices heard at Loyola!”

The court pointed out that the SGA’s process during its October 15 meeting deviated from expected procedures.

The ruling stated that attendance at the executive session should have been limited to those specified in the bylaws, meaning individuals should have left the room when Turning Point USA representatives were present. Therefore, the resulting vote didn’t adhere to the requirements for a public meeting.

Additionally, the court indicated that SGA’s concerns about student “safety” and “campus climate” did not justify the decision to deny the chapter’s official recognition. Before the SGA’s initial vote, the chapter had met all necessary criteria for formal accreditation.

The court also found that the SGA surpassed its authority by demanding a detailed budget from the chapter, even though it had approval for funding from the national organization, TPUSA.

Loyola University acknowledged the ruling on Tuesday afternoon. The school explained that the Student Government Review Court addressed an appeal linked to Turning Point USA’s request to form a student organization. The court nullified the earlier Senate decision and has sent the matter back for reconsideration based on procedural grounds.

“Rooted in its Jesuit mission, Loyola University is dedicated to encouraging dialogue, maintaining transparency, and supporting students committed to democratic practices and shared governance,” the statement concluded.
