New NYPD Commissioner to Stay under Mayor-elect Mamdani

New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch has agreed to stay on as the top cop when Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani takes office, marking a significant attempt to bridge political divides, as reported.

This decision fulfills Mamdani’s campaign promise to retain the well-respected 44-year-old police official, which is seen as a way to alleviate concerns from moderate Democrats and key figures in the city.

In a statement about the appointment, Mamdani’s team commended Tisch for her role in achieving noticeable crime reductions, including the current year’s decline in gun violence.

“I greatly admire her efforts to tackle corruption within law enforcement, reduce crime in New York City, and stand up for the community’s needs,” Mamdani noted.

Tisch mentioned that her decision to remain came after several discussions with Mamdani. “We share many public safety goals for New York City, from fighting crime to ensuring our police officers have the support they need,” she stated.

Tisch and Mamdani plan to focus the NYPD on serious crimes while a proposed new Department of Community Safety (DCS) will handle issues related to homelessness and mental health.

Tisch’s continued role has eased fears, especially given Mamdani’s previous controversial remarks about policing, including calls to defund the police. Critics had previously warned that crime could rise under Mamdani’s leadership.

Some business leaders and established figures in New York, including Tisch’s prominent family, are advocating for her presence in Mamdani’s administration as a check against radical reforms.

Despite both being Democrats, their differing views on public safety make this partnership noteworthy. Tisch has criticized New York’s 2019 criminal justice reforms, which she believes have let criminals back onto the streets too quickly. Conversely, Mamdani has argued these reforms don’t go far enough and supported expanding the NYPD’s workforce.

They also have personal differences—Tisch comes from a well-known Jewish family and is a Zionist, while Mamdani has been a critical voice against Israel. His vocal support for the Palestinian cause has drawn mixed reactions, leading some to label him as anti-Semitic, a claim he continues to reject.
