Arsonist who torched woman on Chicago train suspected in City Hall fire

Investigation into Arson Attacks in Chicago

The individual suspected of setting a woman on fire on a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line train is now being looked at for a prior suspicious fire at City Hall, authorities have reported.

Police have detained the 45-year-old suspect, whose name has not been released, on charges related to the incident involving a 26-year-old commuter. The altercation escalated into violence when the assailant reportedly used an accelerant before igniting the victim after a dispute on the train.

The victim remains in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. Meanwhile, a concerning twist has emerged as police investigate potential links between this attack and a fire that occurred at City Hall several days prior. Sources suggest that the person captured in surveillance footage may resemble the alleged attacker, prompting investigators to seek higher-quality footage to establish a connection.

It’s worth noting that just last week, another alarming incident took place on the Blue Line when a 27-year-old woman was stabbed in the chest by an assailant wielding a knife. This attack happened on November 10 as she waited on a bench at the UIC Halstead station near the University of Illinois at Chicago. The attackers in that case managed to escape at the next station and have yet to be apprehended.

The recent wave of violent incidents has raised safety concerns among CTA passengers. Many are expressing fears that public transit has become increasingly dangerous over the past few years. One commuter, Tariq Lautov, shared his distress, saying, “What happened at L is absolutely horrifying. But I have to say that over the last three or four years, my experience at L has not been pleasant and, at worst, dangerous.”

The CTA has stated that they are collaborating closely with the Chicago Police Department, including detectives stationed at their Strategic Decision Support Center, to assist in the ongoing investigation. This partnership has already led to the arrest of a person of interest.
