Mets Revamp Coaching Staff After Lackluster Season

The New York Mets are completely restructuring their coaching team.

Following a disappointing season that left them out of the playoffs, only three coaches will remain under head coach Carlos Mendoza. The other eight coaches announced in a recent update are all new additions to the dugout.

Among these coaches, three have not been previously reported. They will step up from the minor leagues to join the major league staff.

  • Dan McKinney will serve as the assistant pitching coach. He recently completed his third season with the Mets and has been promoted from his role as the pitching coach for Double-A Binghamton. McKinney has developed strong relationships with several up-and-coming players, including Jonah Tong, Nolan McLean, and Brandon Sproat.

  • Gilbert Gomez returns as the first base and outfield coach for his eighth season. Last year, he guided High-A Brooklyn to its first championship in the South Atlantic League. At just 33, Gomez has previously played as a minor league outfielder for the Mets from 2009 to 2015.

  • JP Arencibia takes the role of catching coach, marking his fifth season with the organization. A former MLB catcher, he has served as the bench coach and assistant hitting coach for Triple-A Syracuse for the last three years and has built a rapport with Francisco Alvarez.

Gomez succeeds Antoan Richardson, who was previously well-regarded for leading the best running game in the majors last season. Despite an invitation to return, Richardson couldn’t come to an agreement with the Mets and is now with the Braves.

The returning staff includes bullpen coach Jose Rosado, quality assurance coach Danny Burns, and assistant hitting coach Rafael Fernandez. Alongside them are manager Jeff Albert, bench coach Kai Correa, hitting coach Troy Snitker, pitching coach Justin Willard, and third base/infield coach Tim Leiper.
