Jon Stewart Reflects on Faith and Religion

During a special segment of “The Daily Show” called “After the Cut,” host Jon Stewart opened up about his struggle with faith in religion. When asked by an audience member about the role faith plays in his life, he quickly responded with a “no,” yet went on to explore the complexities of his relationship with his Jewish upbringing.

Stewart admitted that while he admires the comfort religion offers to many, he himself has doubts. “I hope I can get there someday,” he shared, expressing his skepticism about the idea of a powerful deity, particularly in light of the suffering in the world. He reflected on conversations with fellow comedian Stephen Colbert, a devout Catholic, and remarked, “If he’s so powerful, why are kids dying?”

Despite his reservations, Stewart clarified that he isn’t against religion; it’s more about his personal beliefs. He noted, “Religion has provided a great deal of comfort in a world that’s often torn apart by it.” He acknowledged the complexity of faith, hinting at a possible unknown, saying, “Are we here by divine intervention, or just, like, lucky bathroom molds?”

After his musings, he turned the conversation back to the audience, asking whether they were born into their faith or found it later in life. One woman shared that she embraced her Jewish faith after being born into it, which prompted a thoughtful response from Stewart: “That’s amazing. I wish I could… It’s the idiosyncrasies that keep me going.”

He humorously noted how specific beliefs can sometimes feel a bit absurd, joking about the traditional narratives, which reflects his ongoing internal dialogue about faith and belief.
