Robert Smullen Announces Candidacy for New York’s 21st Congressional District

ALBANY — Robert Smullen, a retired Marine colonel and Republican Congressman from upstate New York, has launched his campaign for the 21st Congressional District seat.

Having represented this northern district since 2019, Smullen is aiming to take over the position currently held by U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, who is vying for the governor’s office and won’t be seeking re-election.

In a statement shared with the Post, Smullen expressed, “As a Marine and public servant, I’ve dedicated my life to defending freedom and working for my community. It’s time we send a servant leader to Washington who prioritizes Upstate.”

Smullen boasts nearly 25 years in the Marine Corps, including leading troops during three tours in Afghanistan and working on defense strategy at the Pentagon.

He noted, “I’ve served under President Trump and believe in his vision for a strong America—one with secure borders and an economy that benefits working people.”

As he steps into Congress, Smullen pledges to align with Trump and continue the successful initiatives of Congresswoman Stefanik to bring results for families in upstate New York.

Historically, the North Country was a contentious district, once won by President Obama in 2012. However, from then on, Stefanik secured victories, consistently garnering over 55% of the votes until 2014.

It remains uncertain if the Republican primary will mirror the earlier chaotic candidate entries that occurred when Stefanik was first nominated by Trump for a United Nations position, which she eventually did not receive.

Recently, former U.S. Senate candidate Joe Pinion mentioned his interest in running for the seat. Additionally, Anthony Constantino, a fervent Trump supporter, might also consider entering the race. Meanwhile, two Democrats, Blake Jendevian and Dylan Hewitt, are also in the mix, though Cook Political Report suggests this is likely to remain a strong Republican seat.
