Amazon’s Automatic Refunds for Prime Customers

Amazon is taking steps to compensate customers who were misled about their Prime subscriptions. This follows a significant $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which confirmed the details of the refunds.

The FTC’s allegations suggested that Amazon made it tricky for customers to sign up for Prime, but then intentionally complicated the cancellation process.

This settlement includes a $1 billion civil penalty, along with $1.5 billion allocated directly to affected Prime subscribers. Each individual may receive up to $51.

Refunds started being issued on November 12, with payments scheduled to continue through December 24. Customers are required to acknowledge their refunds within 15 days of receipt.

New Customer Guidelines

As part of the settlement, Amazon now has to ensure that customers receive clear information, confirm subscriptions with explicit consent, and provide a straightforward cancellation method.

FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson described this resolution as a historic win for many Americans frustrated with difficult-to-cancel subscriptions.

In response, Amazon representative Mark Brafkin stated that the company has always complied with the law and is looking forward to focusing on customer innovations moving forward.

Who Qualifies for Refunds?

To be eligible for a refund, customers must have signed up for Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025. Refunds will be given in two phases.

The first batch will include subscribers who signed up through specific registration flows and have not taken advantage of three or more Prime benefits. Importantly, these customers don’t need to file a claim; they will automatically receive a payment of up to $51.

The second group will need to fill out a form to claim their payment after the automatic refund period ends on December 24. Amazon will contact these eligible customers with the necessary forms. Claims should be submitted within 180 days of receipt.

How to Claim Your Refund

Customers eligible for automatic refunds will be notified by email and can choose to receive their payments via PayPal or Venmo. If anyone prefers a check instead, they are advised to disregard Amazon’s refund emails.

The FTC clarified that if no PayPal or Venmo payment is selected, a check will be mailed to the address associated with the Prime subscription, and it must be cashed within 60 days.

Furthermore, those eligible but who do not receive an automatic refund should wait for updates in 2026, when Amazon plans to start billing for those who missed the automatic refunds in late 2025.
