Trinity Rodman aims for NWSL title amid swirling departure rumors

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Trinity Rodman Addresses NWSL Future Ahead of Championship Match

As the Washington Spirit prepares for Saturday’s championship clash with Gotham FC, forward Trinity Rodman is doing her best to quell rumors about her future in the NWSL. Speculation has been swirling regarding potential international offers from top European clubs, yet Rodman emphasized that “nothing is set in stone” as she approaches her free agency.

Interestingly, she mentioned that it hadn’t crossed her mind that Saturday could be her final game in the league. “I’m not there at all,” Rodman clarified. “There may be some talks, but right now I’m really excited to represent the Spirit. I’m not even thinking about when my last game will be. But yeah, I just want to win. We’ll see.”

Rodman finds herself at a crucial juncture in NWSL history, where salary cap regulations might push star players to pursue better pay elsewhere. Reports suggest that DC Power, a team in the Gainbridge Super League, has made Rodman a contract offer that far exceeds any possibilities with the Spirit, primarily due to existing salary cap limitations.

During a recent press conference, NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman addressed questions surrounding the salary cap. She pointed out that it has “nearly quadrupled” in the last four years thanks to the league’s growing popularity and revenue streams. However, Berman remains opposed to altering the hard cap, which sits at $3.5 million per team this season.

Rodman reflected on whether the current salary cap structure is the best for the league. “It’s hard to say,” she remarked. “Women’s sports are always fighting for equal pay so they can get paid more for the work they do. But again, I’m 23 years old. I’m not going to completely change the league and try to fix that. But at the same time, yeah, we’re always going to push and strive for more.”

Despite the uncertainties, Berman remains committed to retaining Rodman in the league, stating, “We want Trinity in the NWSL and we’re going to fight for her.” Rodman expressed appreciation for Berman’s support but also noted the pressure that comes with it. “But at the same time, I don’t want to put pressure on myself because she said that, and now I’m like, ‘Oh, shoot, I’m locked in,'” she added. “Again, I’m focused on this weekend. That’s all I can really focus on. And then we move forward, and that’s when we really need to have the conversations and make the hard decisions.”

In addition, the NWSL announced that Berman has signed a multi-year contract extension, continuing her role in guiding the league toward its next phase of growth. Since becoming the NWSL Commissioner in 2022, Berman has overseen numerous milestones, including a new collective bargaining agreement and league expansion efforts.

“Jessica’s leadership has helped transform the NWSL into a global sports asset,” said Carolyn Tisch Blodgett, Gotham FC owner and NWSL Executive Chair. “Her vision for sustainable growth and her ability to foster lasting momentum have positioned the league for long-term success.” According to reports, Berman’s contract is set through the 2028 season.
