Rumors of Tariq Skubal Moving to the Yankees
Could Tariq Skubal be headed to the Bronx? Former Yankees outfielder Cameron Maybin recently suggested that the Yankees could “conquer the entire league” by trading for the Detroit Tigers’ ace.
On Thursday, Maybin stated, “Acquiring Skubal would be the move of the offseason, even more than pairing Kyle Tucker with Cody Bellinger.”
Having spent a strong year with the Yankees in 2019, Maybin knows a thing or two about trades—he was part of a blockbuster deal that sent him to the Marlins in exchange for Miguel Cabrera back in December 2007.
Maybin elaborated on the Tigers’ approach regarding Skubal’s contract situation. He indicated that the team seems hesitant to meet Skubal’s price. “It’s like they just don’t want to pay him what he’s worth. I think they might be trying to convince themselves it’s not wise to do so,” he mentioned.
This left-handed pitcher, now 29, is arguably one of the top starters in baseball. In 2025, Skubal had a remarkable season, starting 31 games with a 13-6 record and a league-leading ERA of 2.21, earning the American League Cy Young Award for the second time in a row. The previous year, he achieved the AL Triple Crown by leading in wins, earned run average, and strikeouts.
Despite his impressive track record, it’s reported that the Tigers are reluctant to meet his contract demands as he approaches free agency after the 2026 season. This uncertainty has sparked a slew of trade rumors, with reports indicating a significant gap of $250 million in negotiations with Skubal.
Interestingly, Skubal himself has expressed confusion over the trade discussions, questioning why he’s even being mentioned. “It’s all out of my control. I mean, it’s not like I’m eager to be traded. Why am I in this conversation at all?” he stated to Foul Territory. Ultimately, he believes it doesn’t affect his daily routine.
Returning to Maybin’s perspective, he stressed that bringing in not just Skubal but potentially another award-winning pitcher could be game-changing for the Yankees. He mentioned the potential of having Skubal alongside a healthy Sandy Alcantara, Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, and Carlos Rodón. “That’s a playoff nightmare for any batting lineup out there. And honestly, I don’t want to hear about payroll. This is the Yankees we’re talking about.”
He concluded with a rallying cry: “If you want to win, then just find a way to make it happen!”
