Mike Pence supports the U.S.-Israel partnership during discussions within the conservative movement

The conservative movement has been facing significant turmoil lately. There have been internal conflicts among former allies, established institutions are in upheaval, and some voices within the right—both seasoned and fresh—are questioning whether the U.S. should maintain its support for Israel. This is a pivotal question that demands a clear response. For the safety of our nation, the promotion of democracy in the Middle East, and our country’s future, I firmly believe America needs to stand by Israel.

It’s essential for Americans to engage in discussions about our overseas spending and whether our foreign policies truly reflect our national interests. Younger generations, in particular, are seeking more substantive answers that extend beyond well-worn phrases. However, there’s something deeper, possibly darker, prompting these inquiries. After years of conflict in the Middle East, some seem tempted by isolationism, viewing moral clarity as a form of naivety and seeing allies as burdens amidst our immense national debt. For others, it may simply come down to anti-Semitic sentiments.

Whether on social media or in the halls of Congress, the rise of anti-Semitic rhetoric on both sides of the political spectrum represents a dangerous trend that must be opposed. Anti-Semitism has no place in the conservative movement.

For close to eight decades, the relationship between the U.S. and Israel has transcended mere diplomacy. It embodies a partnership among people who share common ideals: faith, the inherent dignity of individuals, and an appreciation for freedom. Israel’s survival doesn’t rely on our charity; rather, it depends on a strong partnership, which in turn enhances America’s security and prosperity.

Long before Israel was established, America’s Founding Fathers advocated for the return of Jews to their homeland and acknowledged the importance of the Jewish faith in the U.S. George Washington assured Jewish Americans of their safety, while John Adams supported the idea of an independent Jewish state. Elias Boudinot even suggested that America was destined to aid in reestablishing the Jewish people in their own land. Even Benjamin Franklin, notably frugal, extended help to a synagogue in need in Philadelphia.

But the significance of Israel today reaches far beyond historical ties. Currently, it stands as a beacon of democracy amid a region rife with Islamic states and monarchies. Ironically, in a world comprising 46 Muslim-majority nations, many of Israel’s neighbors consider the existence of a single Jewish state intolerable. Thirty-one countries still do not recognize Israel at all, and some would gladly see it erased from existence. Yet, Israel persists.

The courage displayed by Israel, coupled with America’s strategic actions against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, has meant that we are no longer under the threat of a nuclear regime openly proclaiming “Death to America.” From the Stuxnet cyber operation to Israeli support for U.S. airstrikes, Israel has been integral in slowing Iran’s path toward nuclear capability. Those efforts not only protect Israeli cities but also safeguard every American city vulnerable to Iranian hostility.

Some on the New Right might misinterpret isolation as safety, but the rest of us recognize the stakes involved if the world’s foremost sponsor of terrorism were to achieve nuclear power. When Israel engages with Iranian proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas, it’s not merely acting on our commands; it’s a matter of moral obligation. The conflict is between civilization and chaos. Israel’s fight is our fight.

If Israel thrives—like when it successfully decapitated Hezbollah’s leadership in a precise operation in 2024—the safety of America would be further assured. The rationale for our alliance is clear.

Yet, the heart of U.S. assistance is founded on shared values and beliefs. We support Israel because we value justice, goodness, and freedom over tyranny. It’s vital that we empower Israel to combat those who threaten its existence—particularly terrorists who hide behind innocents and indiscriminately launch attacks. Eradicating Hamas is crucial for achieving peace and justice within and beyond Gaza.

Historically, Americans have always rallied behind Israel. The existence of this enduring nation serves as a testament to divine fidelity. Support from countless Americans over generations draws on the ancient promises recorded in Genesis: “I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you I will curse.”

For 250 years, America has enjoyed unparalleled blessings. As we prepare to celebrate as a nation, it’s crucial that we uphold our commitments and remain loyal to our valued allies. If the world learns anything, it should be this: America stands with Israel.
