Robert Saleh’s Potential Return to New York
It seems Robert Saleh might be on the verge of making a return to New York. The current head coaching position with the Giants is reportedly in play for him, as one NFL source suggests he’ll likely generate some interest.
Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated mentioned, “Saleh should certainly attract attention and has a good chance of landing the position.” He pointed out that Saleh interviews well and has solid relationships with many offensive coaches from the Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay coaching trees. This should help him find a competent offensive coordinator without much hassle, potentially breathing new life into a floundering franchise.
He said, “The Titans or Giants could definitely take a long hard look at him, especially if he decides to team up with Mike McDaniel—or possibly Mike LaFleur—if things don’t pan out for them in their current roles.”
Saleh’s tenure with the Jets ended on a low note after a loss to the Vikings in London, which resulted in a 2-3 record for the season, and ultimately led to his firing by owner Woody Johnson.
However, he managed to revitalize his career by returning to the 49ers as their defensive coordinator. He played a crucial role in keeping the team competitive, despite numerous injuries.
But it’s worth noting that the scars from his 20-36 record with the Jets are still fresh. “It hasn’t been easy,” Saleh admitted to the Post’s Mark Cannizzaro before a recent game. “You always want to compete until the end, but you must move on and bounce back as quickly as possible.”
He expressed confidence in himself and the team around him, stating, “I don’t feel the need to prove anything; I’ll just give it my all and hope for the best.”
The Giants recently terminated Brian Daboll’s contract after starting the season at 2-8, while the Titans parted ways with Brian Callahan back in October. These events could present Saleh with a unique opportunity to build a team around a franchise quarterback—something he never had with the Jets. Tennessee is banking on top draft pick Cam Ward, whereas the Giants are optimistic about Jackson Dart.
Dart, picked at number 25 in the 2025 NFL Draft, has certainly caught Saleh’s attention. “They hit the jackpot with this kid,” he remarked. “He has those Mahomes-like qualities. I can’t stress enough how good he is.”
Will this be enough to lure Saleh back to New York? Only time will tell.
