NBA players reveal hard truths about WNBA stars: 'It should be obvious'

WNBA and NBA Comparisons Stir Debate

Recently, some men’s basketball players expressed their frustration over comparisons of their skills to those of WNBA players. Following a statement from a former NBA player suggesting that the 2025 WNBA champions could defeat an NBA team, a group of basketball fans felt compelled to clarify their stance on the potential matchup.

During a discussion on the “Ball in the Family Podcast,” NBA players Michael Porter Jr., Lonzo Ball, and former pro LiAngelo Ball tackled the subject of skill comparisons between the leagues. Porter brought up WNBA star Paige Bueckers’ bold claim that she could win a one-on-one against NBA player Josh Hart.

“Did you catch that?” Porter asked, referring to Bueckers’ confidence. The other panel members quickly agreed that Josh Hart would have no chance against her. Given Hart’s respectable average of around ten points per game, they felt the skills gap was too wide to consider a fair match.

The conversation then shifted to what scenarios could see male and female players facing off. Porter speculated that perhaps an eighth-grader would be a more appropriate matchup. He reminisced about competing against female college athletes during his youth when his sisters played at the University of Missouri.

“Back then, I stood out against the girls, so it’s just a different level of play. I wish we could put this topic to rest because it feels like common sense,” he said, clearly exasperated by the ongoing debate.

Interestingly, the other panelists didn’t immediately rally for the female players either. Lonzo Ball even took the opportunity to emphasize his past achievements, recounting how he could dunk over six feet during his ninth-grade basketball days—a feat, he claimed, no girl in the WNBA could replicate.

Despite his respectable average of eleven points per game in the NBA, some might question the comparisons he was making. “Respectfully speaking, I was at my peak back then,” Ball noted, underscoring his confidence in his abilities.

Porter, at the episode’s start, expressed concern over professional teams having previously discouraged open discussions about the discrepancies in skill levels. Within the Brooklyn Nets, he remarked, there were gentle nudges to avoid sensitive topics, like the WNBA’s competitive standing.

He has also suggested before, according to reports, that a matchup between the WNBA All-Star team and the best male high school players would likely end in favor of the boys.

“No hard feelings, but that’s the reality,” he offered, trying to clarify his stance without disrespecting any players.

In light of this debate, former NBA player Pat Beverley also mentioned that the WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces could potentially compete well against NBA teams, which provoked strong reactions from those who heard it. A few guests on the podcast simply dismissed the idea, deeming it absurd.
