FAA Readies for Thanksgiving Travel Surge

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is gearing up for what is expected to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel period since 2010, starting next week.

On Tuesday, November 25, over 52,000 flights are anticipated, according to a news release from the agency. Overall, more than 360,000 flights are scheduled throughout the Thanksgiving travel window.

“We’re prepared for the holiday rush, thanks to the hard work of our air traffic controllers and FAA staff. It’s great to assist travelers as they reconnect with loved ones during this vital time,” stated FAA Administrator Brian Bedford. His gratitude towards the team was clear: “Their commitment ensures that our systems operate safely, even with record traffic.”

AAA estimates that around 82 million Americans will be traveling, whether by road or air, from Tuesday, December 1, to the following Monday as they head out for their Thanksgiving festivities.

However, travelers should remain aware of two weather systems that could impact travel plans. The first storm is predicted to develop on Monday, November 24, progressing into the Southeast and possibly reaching the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast by Tuesday, bringing rain to the southern Plains.

A second storm is also on the way, forecasted to emerge on Monday, causing more rain and cooler temperatures in the Pacific Northwest. Fortunately, some areas — particularly in the West, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast — are set for a dry Thanksgiving Day.

The FAA urges travelers to exercise patience this holiday season and aim to arrive at the airport well in advance to check in and clear TSA security.
