Marjorie Taylor Greene to Resign from Congress
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, has announced her resignation from Congress, set for January 5, 2026. This date falls just before the start of the 119th Congress.
In a video posted on X, Greene expressed her gratitude to voters in Georgia’s 14th District and shared her reflections on her time in office. She mentioned personal and political motivations for her departure, including a desire to focus on her family and support the “America First” agenda outside of Washington.
This decision comes during a period of significant political upheaval and marks the end of a notable career marked by controversy and support for former President Donald Trump. Recently, Trump publicly withdrew his endorsement of Greene, labeling her a “traitor” and criticizing her for perceived shifts in her political stance. She has also indicated a willingness to support a primary challenger in the upcoming Georgia midterms.
Greene, who first took office in 2020, rose to prominence as a strong supporter of Trump and the MAGA movement. She faced early calls for resignation from various activists, particularly following her controversial remarks about the Parkland shooting. Despite the backlash, she was re-elected in both 2022 and 2024, maintaining solid backing in her conservative district.
However, tensions peaked in late 2025 when Greene publicly disagreed with Trump over issues like foreign policy and healthcare, asserting her adherence to “America First” principles. Following this discord, Trump removed his support for her.
In the weeks leading to her announcement, Greene attempted to mend fences by apologizing for her previous statements. In an interview, she spoke about starting anew and went on to appear on platforms where she had once faced criticism.
A special election will be arranged to fill her Congressional seat.
