Matthew McConaughey recently shared that his romantic dreams played a key role in leading him to his wife, Camila Alves.
“In my mid-30s, I was searching for the love of my life, my best friend, and the future mother of my children,” the “Dallas Buyers Club” actor wrote in his newsletter, “Lyrics of Living.”
He added that he was eager for a deeper connection, specifically with one person—and then had a wet dream.
The 56-year-old actor recounted a vivid dream where he envisioned an older version of himself sitting on his balcony in a rocking chair surrounded by 22 women, 22 cars, and an extraordinary 88 children.
During what felt like a celebration of his 88th birthday, he noted that each of the 88 children symbolized a year from his life, yet he was not married to any of the women present. “All the women seemed calm and happy,” he recalled, mentioning that every child was joyful and healthy.
In his reflections, McConaughey described nostalgic moments with his mother as they shared memories of the kids sitting on his lap.
This “beautiful dream,” as he termed it, reminded him that his primary aspiration was to be a father, while also conveying that he didn’t necessarily have to rush into marriage.
He conveyed how this experience shifted his perspective, stating that it served as a “spiritual sign,” encouraging him to stop seeking out a partner so frantically. “I stopped looking for her,” he explained.
Ironically, just three months later, he met Camila. He described her as the only woman he’s desired to date, sleep beside, or wake up with, even after twenty years together.
They went on to have three children and ultimately tied the knot in 2012. McConaughey has mentioned previously how his son Levi played a pivotal role in influencing his decision to marry Camila. Levi, at the age of four, pointed out that his parents didn’t share a last name, which prompted McConaughey to reconsider his commitment.
Feeling a mix of apprehension and realization, he admitted that he was also afraid of making such a commitment, but ultimately sought counsel from married elders before deciding to tie the knot with Alves.
The couple, who began dating in 2006 after meeting at a nightclub in West Hollywood, welcomed their first child, Levi, followed by their daughter Vida in 2008 and son Livingston in 2012, the same year they wed.
