Exclusive Trader Groups Gaining Popularity
There’s a certain allure to exclusive events—think secret dinners and tropical getaways. One notable example is the private trading club, recently established and currently accepting applications for a monthly fee of $599. Unlike traditional financial networking, this group is off-limits to typical financial professionals.
While anyone can apply, they emphasize attracting traders with some unique traits. Founder Minwoo Lim expressed a desire for members to possess sophistication and strong values, steering clear of distractions like romantic interests. “To those who are subscribing, let’s grow together. And in this capitalist world, money is everything,” he remarked, highlighting the club’s ambitions.
The club is open for applications until early December. It hasn’t fully launched yet, but the trend of members-only groups is on the rise, particularly among retail investors. Many are seeking refuge in such circles, distancing themselves from the often chaotic spirit of online communities like WallStreetBets.
Members have shared with Business Insider that, while networking events are great perks, a significant portion of their time is dedicated to trading together. It’s about creating a sense of exclusivity, surrounding oneself with like-minded individuals who are serious about trading and potentially successful.
There’s a growing craving for community among traders. Day traders often feel isolated, and this has led to an explosion in trading classes and meetup events. Google Trends indicates a sharp increase in searches for trading groups and clubs, with interest in “trading club” alone spiking by 239% over the past year.
David Villalobos, a 21-year-old trader in Colorado, founded the Elite Trading Network, aimed at serious traders. He’s looking for young, ambitious individuals who view trading as a lifelong pursuit. His group, currently about 30 members strong, saw applications increase 1,500% over the last year, reflecting a desire for more structured trading communities.
Villalobos believes that members should be dedicated to their trading ambitions. He dedicates up to 16 hours a day to market research, explaining, “I don’t have a partner or kids, so my life can be lonely. But for those few who are equally committed, it’s worth it.”
The Forex Lounge, a trading education platform, has also launched a private group, which has gained traction in the past year, experiencing a 60% uptick in inquiries. Greg Drugi, the head of trading, notes that their group mainly consists of older millennials and younger Gen Z members. Admission has become stricter, as he prefers members referred by existing members or those who fit well within the community.
Community Focus
Villalobos highlighted that members participate in group chats, exchanging ideas and supporting one another in their trading endeavors. However, it’s not all work; the inner circle of his group frequently gathers for outings, enjoying coffee and fine dining.
“The Inner Circle signifies that you’re a profitable trader, taking control of your life—celebrating being part of this group,” he explained. Similarly, Drugi’s Forex Lounge group communicates largely via WhatsApp and video calls, with in-person gatherings at events like week-long bootcamps.
“We work during the day and play at night,” Drugi remarked, noting that many members forge close friendships over shared goals.
Lim has plans for various social events, aiming to help traders connect. The agenda includes luxury meetups, annual retreats, and celebrations of members’ achievements. Networking for investment opportunities is a key focus, fostering exchange among members.
Villalobos noted that some in his group even have connections to prestigious universities like Harvard, underlining the authenticity of their network.
Drugi believes the trend towards exclusivity is part of a larger societal shift, suggesting that the allure of a highly selective environment can increase its appeal. “I want Forex Lounge to be known as exclusive for good reason—because joining means you’ll be supported to achieve success,” he asserted.
