Kevin Huerter of the Bulls surprised by his unexpected ejection

Kevin Huerter’s night took an unexpected turn, leading to an early exit.

During a game against the Heat, the Bulls player faced one of the season’s most contentious ejections after inadvertently hitting a referee while slamming the ball.

Huerter’s reaction—and that of Bulls coach Billy Donovan—was one of disbelief following a shot in the third quarter of the Bulls’ 143-107 loss.

“There wasn’t much explanation,” Huerter reflected afterward. “I apologized to the referee. There was no intention to be malicious or offensive. It seems I misunderstood the rules, but I’ve learned now.”

It seems he might have crossed a line. According to NBA Rule 12, Section 5, a technical foul can be issued for physical contact with an official or for overt displays of frustration regarding a referee’s decision.

In a surprising moment with the Bulls ahead 78-57, referee Che Flores called a foul on Huerter, who was defending against Pere Larson, with just over eight minutes left in the third quarter.

Feeling frustrated by the call, Huerter slammed the ball down, and, unfortunately for him, it struck Flores’s leg, who had his back turned.

As the referee’s whistle blew and Huerter stood there, arms raised in disbelief, official Tony Brothers walked in and assessed him with a technical foul, effectively ejecting him from the game.

Following the ejection, the officials spoke with Donovan, who appeared puzzled by what had just happened. They informed him they would review the play. After looking at the footage, however, the initial decision stood.

“It was almost as if his sole intention was to hit the referee with the ball,” Donovan said, expressing his perspective. “Initially, he approached me to clarify his decision to eject the player because, obviously, that’s a serious call. I didn’t witness the review myself, but I trust the officials’ judgment.” He acknowledged the gravity of the situation, mentioning the importance of trust in their decisions.

Ultimately, Huerter’s ejection was upheld, cutting his game short at just 10 minutes with a mere three points scored.

“I’m sorry if I overstepped, but it clearly escalated too far, and now we move forward,” Huerter commented.
