Ways to Prevent Google AI from Scanning Your Emails

Google has started to access private emails and attachments from Gmail users to train its AI models, requiring manual opt-outs to avoid this. Users need to opt out in two different areas for the changes to be effective. If you’re concerned about your privacy amid Google’s AI initiatives, here’s how to take action:

A recent report reveals that Google has made changes allowing Gmail to analyze private messages and attachments for AI training. This means your emails might be used to improve AI features like Smart Compose and AI-generated responses, unless you take steps to withdraw consent.

Google’s intention behind this shift appears to be enhancing Gmail functionality through its Gemini AI, aimed at helping users write emails more efficiently and better manage their inboxes. The company is utilizing actual email content, including attachments, for this purpose. Shockingly, these settings are reported to be enabled by default, unlike previous explicit opt-in requirements.

This leads to a situation where, if users don’t manually disable these settings, their private communications could be used for AI training without their knowledge. Although Google asserts that strong privacy measures are in place—like anonymizing data during the training process—those dealing with sensitive information might not find this very reassuring.

To fully opt out of Gmail’s AI training, users must adjust their settings in two distinct areas. This guide outlines the process for desktop users, but it’s pretty similar for those using the mobile app as well.

First opt-out: Disable “Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet”

Step 1: Click the gear icon at the top right of the Gmail interface and select See All Settings.

Step 2: Scroll to the “Smart Features” section about halfway through the settings options. Uncheck the box for “Turn on smart features for Gmail, Chat, and Meet.”

Step 3: You’ll need to refresh Gmail to disable the “smart features.” After reloading, it’s a good idea to go through the menus again to confirm that it’s turned off.

Once you’re sure you’ve opted out successfully, Google’s AI training hook should be disabled.

Second opt-out: Disable “Google Workspace smart features”

Step 4: In the same settings menu, locate the section for “Google Workspace Smart Features.” This is typically just below the previous section. Click on Manage Workspace Smart Features Settings.

Step 5: Uncheck both options and then click Save. The indicators for both “Smart Features for Google Workspace” and “Smart Features for Other Google Products” should change from blue checkmarks to gray “X”s.

After you complete these actions, double-check both settings to ensure everything is disabled properly.

The rollout of these features without clear prior consent has raised concerns among privacy advocates and security experts. By following these steps, you can take proactive measures to shield yourself and others from intrusive AI training methods.
