Travis Kelce’s Retirement Thoughts Amid NFL Playoff Push
Discussions surrounding Travis Kelce’s potential retirement have been ongoing for a few seasons now. Yet, as the playoff race heats up, the Kansas City Chiefs star hasn’t really addressed it recently.
As he enters the 13th season of his NFL career, Kelce seems to be considering his future, particularly since he’s in the final year of his contract with the Chiefs. This situation raises the question—will he choose to return, or is he ready to officially step away and conclude his Hall of Fame journey?
Before the Chiefs face the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday, aiming to break a two-game losing streak, Kelce mentioned he intends to inform the Chiefs of his decision by March 2026, at the start of NFL free agency.
“Regardless of my decision or whether the team wants me back, I want to give the Chiefs ample opportunity,” he said. “I’d like to make that decision before free agency opens so they can adjust their draft picks and fill out the roster properly.” He’s set on not thinking about all this until the season wraps up.
Kelce, now 36, also expressed thoughts about his personal life, particularly regarding his dating aspirations. Unlike his fiancée, who enjoys touring, he’s not interested in a “farewell tour” of sorts. “That’s just not me,” he stated.
Looking at his performance this season, there’s a strong case for his return in 2026. The Chiefs might have a 5-5 record, but the connection between him and Patrick Mahomes remains undeniable. They’ve teamed up for three Super Bowl victories. This season, despite some questions about his abilities following last year, Kelce has racked up impressive stats: 50 receptions for 631 yards and four touchdowns over ten games, pushing him towards another 1,000-yard season.
While the Chiefs faced some receiving challenges last season, the return of Laci Rice seems to have sparked their passing game. Kelce currently ranks among the top tight ends in the NFL. Only Trey McBride from the Arizona Cardinals has more receiving yards than Kelce this season.
Kelce credits his teammates for his success, noting, “I’m a product of my current environment.” He emphasizes the importance of team dynamics and the synergy he’s built with his fellow players, especially Mahomes.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised Kelce’s efforts, stating, “He worked incredibly hard this offseason to stay in top shape. As players age, it takes a bit more effort, but he’s been dedicated, and it shows.”
As Kelce’s future remains a hot topic, it’s clear his focus is on leading the Chiefs back to the playoffs. The AFC West title appears to be heading elsewhere for the first time since 2015, when they fell to the Denver Broncos with a 9-2 record.
