Nic Claxton's first career triple-double showcased his development with the Nets

Nick Claxton’s Standout Performance

On Friday, Nick Claxton mentioned he had been “waiting for this moment” all season long. He anticipated this milestone, and it finally came during a 113-105 victory over the Celtics at TD Garden.

Claxton notched his first career triple-double with 18 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds, marking a significant win for the Nets against a dominant team, while also sidestepping elimination from the NBA Cup.

What made it even more special was that he received the game ball in the presence of his parents, notably his father Charles, who is a former Celtics player.

After the game, Claxton expressed his feelings, saying, “It felt great. It was a solid team win and everyone played their part. It’s my first triple-double in Boston.” He also shared how meaningful it was to have his parents there, noting, “They’ve supported me all along. We need to keep building on this progress. We’ve been improving lately, and we need to keep pushing forward.”

However, this victory might complicate things for fans hoping for a top draft pick. With this win, the Nets (3-12) slipped back to fifth in the lottery odds, now just behind the Kings (3-13).

Yet, for the Nets, the boost in confidence is invaluable. Some argue that developing a stronger team is more important than aiming for the number one pick.

For coach Jordi Fernandes, watching Claxton’s development has been rewarding, especially considering Claxton’s long-term commitment to the team after signing a four-year, $100 million contract last summer.

Claxton is particularly being recognized for his rebounding skills. This season, he’s averaging 7.5 rebounds per game, slightly up from 7.4 last season, though he still aims to reach his career-high of 9.9 set in 2023-24. In the last two games against Boston, he pulled down 11 boards.

Fernandes emphasized the importance of Claxton’s growth, saying, “He’s been working on his game—getting aggressive, improving his rebounding. He really put it all together.” He highlighted Claxton’s performance in terms of board work and playmaking, noting, “We needed him to step up on rebounds, and he did just that.”

After recording 12 assists on Friday, including six in the fourth quarter, Claxton is currently averaging 4.4 assists per game, already a career high compared to his previous average of 2.2 last season.

“When I play like that, involving my teammates and rebounding, it just elevates the entire team,” Claxton remarked. “The more we focus on that, the better our chances of winning.”

Having experienced ups and downs over his seven years with the Nets, he aims to savor this victory. “I hope this is just the beginning,” he concluded.
