Ryan Reynolds Reveals Gwyneth Paltrow’s Role in Astronomer PSA

Ryan Reynolds shared how he managed to get Gwyneth Paltrow involved in a humorous PSA for Astronomer following the Coldplay kiss cam incident.

Reynolds’ company, Maximum Effort, was behind the cheeky ad featuring Paltrow, released shortly after Astronomer CEO Andy Bailon was caught on the Kiss Cam at a Coldplay concert in Boston, embracing colleague Christine Cabot.

The situation took a lighthearted turn when Paltrow’s ex-husband, Chris Martin, quipped that they were having an “affair” as they quickly ducked out of view.

“Exactly 14 hours later, I was aware of the need, and I had their blessings. But I think… at that moment, no one was really clear on what Astronomer was up to,” Reynolds explained during a discussion at the Wall Street Journal’s CMO Council Summit.

“So I thought, ‘What if Gwyneth explains it?'” Reynolds, 49, remarked.

He expressed admiration for Astronomer, describing it as a commendable company that does great work. “It was a chance to shift the conversation away from the gossip and focus on what really matters, even though it was all a bit awkward,” he added.

In the wake of the incident on July 16, both Mr. Bailon and Mr. Cabot stepped down from their roles after the incident gained traction.

Just over a week later, on July 25, Paltrow appeared in the PSA, skillfully steering clear of the controversy and clarifying what the company actually does. “I was briefly hired to represent the over 300 employees at Astronomer,” she stated at a desk in the video.

As she continued, the screen displayed text asking, “Q: Oh! What’s the real deal?”

In a cheerful tone, she responded, “Yes! Astronomer is the perfect place to run Apache Airflow!” The ad then transitioned to another question: “How’s your social media team doing?”

Paltrow exclaimed with enthusiasm, “Yes! We still have spaces available for the Beyond Analytics event this September!”

The PSA, which debuted on Astronomer’s LinkedIn page, featured Paltrow as the “temporary” spokesperson, and Reynolds noted it was a way to redirect the focus away from the controversy.

She wrapped up by stating, “Thank you for your interest in Astronomer. Now we can get back to delivering innovative results for our clients.”

Paltrow was married to Chris Martin from 2003 to 2014, and they share two adult children: daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 19.
