Donald Glover Explains Childish Gambino Tour Cancellation
Donald Glover recently opened up about why he had to cancel Childish Gambino’s tour last year. During his appearance at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Frog Know Carnival, he shared with the audience at Dodger Stadium that he experienced a stroke, which abruptly ended his New World Tour after just 18 shows.
Reflecting on the experience, Glover mentioned, “It was a lot of fun, and I was really happy to see everyone. But I had this really bad headache in Louisiana.” He later added that he struggled to see properly during one show, which led him to seek medical attention in Houston where doctors confirmed he was having a stroke.
In a light-hearted moment, Glover joked about feeling like he was “still emulating” Jamie Foxx, who faced a serious stroke in 2023. He expressed initial feelings of disappointment, saying, “At first I was like, ‘I’m letting everyone down.'”
Aside from the stroke, Glover also revealed that he suffered a broken leg around that time. He recalled his commitment to perform in Ireland and discovering he had a hole in his heart, which led to multiple surgeries.
Glover reflected on life choices, saying, “They say everyone has two lives, but the second life begins when you realize you have one life. You only live once.” He expressed gratitude for the experiences he has had with his audience, emphasizing his love for performing.
In a more philosophical note, he quoted, “If this life is a taste, give me another drink as soon as it’s over,” implying that living life fully is essential, even amidst challenges.
Last October, he canceled the remaining tour dates due to health issues but initially kept the extent of his condition private. He wrote in a social media statement, “After the show in New Orleans, I went to a hospital in Houston to confirm my apparent illness. It became clear that I would not be performing that night.”
Glover stated, “Further tests have revealed that I will not be able to complete the remainder of my US tour in the scheduled time. Surgery is currently scheduled and I need time to heal. I need to take my road to recovery seriously.”
His tour was set to begin in August 2024 and continue through February 2025, with the last performance occurring on September 7, 2024, in New Orleans.
Glover had also mentioned that this tour would signify the end of his time as Childish Gambino, reflecting that it felt like a closure. “It was really like, ‘Oh, it’s over,’ he stated. “It’s not fulfilling. And I felt like I didn’t need to build this way anymore.”
