Apple Introduces Digital Passport Feature for TSA Lines

This holiday season, Apple is rolling out a new option aimed at making your trips through TSA much easier. You can now store your passport within the Wallet app on your iPhone. This means—rather than rummaging through your bag—you can simply use your digital ID at over 250 airports across the United States. As the use of digital IDs expands, there are some key points you might want to consider before diving in.

Understanding Apple Digital ID

A digital ID securely keeps your passport details on your device, with all data encrypted. Importantly, Apple doesn’t track how or when you utilize your digital ID.

When you show your digital ID to TSA, you’ll see a request pop up on your screen. You can select what info to share, confirming with Face ID or Touch ID. This provides a layer of security, making sure only you can access your ID.

Where Can You Use Digital ID?

Currently, digital IDs are applicable for identity verification at select TSA lanes during domestic flights. They’re not usable for international trips or border crossings. Apple also plans to broaden the use of digital IDs to specific hotels, shops, and online services that need age verification.

Eligibility for Apple Digital ID

To add a digital ID to your Apple Wallet, you need an unexpired U.S. passport and an iPhone 11 or newer with iOS version 26.1 or later. If your phone isn’t updated yet, you can do so by going to the settings, selecting “General,” then “Software Update.” Before proceeding, ensure your phone is charged and connected to Wi-Fi.

Keep in mind that the digital ID only functions at designated TSA checkpoints for domestic flights and does not replace the need for a physical passport. It’s wise to carry your actual passport or driver’s license, especially when traveling abroad, as you might still need them.

How to Add Your Passport to Apple Wallet

  • Setup is quick. You need an iPhone and a valid U.S. passport.
  • Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  • Tap the ‘Add’ button.
  • Select ‘Driver’s License’ or ‘ID Card’.
  • Choose ‘Digital Identity’.
  • Click ‘Add to iPhone and Apple Watch’ or just ‘Add to iPhone’.
  • Scan the photo page of your passport.
  • Hold your iPhone close to the passport chip to read it.
  • When you see “Confirmation Required,” tap ‘Continue’.
  • Take a selfie for verification.
  • Follow prompts to move your head slightly.
  • Wait for verification.
  • Your Digital ID will appear in Apple Wallet once approved—you’ll get a notification confirming readiness.

Google Wallet: A Similar Option

If you’re using Google, you can also keep a digital version of your U.S. passport in Google Wallet. Like Apple’s offering, this is supported at TSA checkpoints for domestic travel. Having your physical passport or driver’s license on hand is still advisable, just in case.

How to Add Your Passport to Google Wallet

  • Open the Google Wallet app on your Android device.
  • Tap ‘Add to Wallet’.
  • Choose ‘ID Card’ and then ‘U.S. Passport’.
  • Scan the photo page of your passport.
  • Hold your phone near the passport chip to read it.
  • Record a selfie video for identity verification.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts for head movement.
  • Wait for verification.
  • Your passport will be in Google Wallet once approved.

It seems that digital IDs could really change how we handle travel. With the convenience of technology, it might feel less stressful navigating crowded TSA lines. Just remember to keep your physical ID handy as a safety net.
