Universities in the South Gaining Popularity Among Northeastern Students
Recent reports indicate that Southern universities are becoming increasingly appealing to students from the Northeast, as various factors seem to be driving this trend. For instance, Jacob Luce, a student at Auburn University, mentioned that, “Here people care more about family, God, and country, and you don’t see a lot of that in the Northeast.”
During an appearance on “Fox & Friends First,” Luce and University of Miami student Angel Aguilar discussed how schools in Southern states—like Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and Mississippi—are welcoming a growing number of students from the Northeast.
Ruth, a commentator, pointed out that politics, culture, and a sense of belonging play significant roles in this shift. Many students are attracted to the values and relaxed lifestyle found on Southern campuses. Aguilar added that academic excellence is a crucial factor drawing students South.
Foreign Student Enrollment Drops
Ruth shared an anecdote about a young woman involved with the Turning Point chapter at Auburn University, who expressed feelings of humility, safety, and comfort on campus.
Aguilar highlighted institutions like the University of Florida, Florida State University, and Florida International University as exemplary public universities, presenting strong alternatives to Ivy League schools. “Many of Florida’s institutions are improving academically, which enhances their appeal in the South,” he stated.
University Successes
For example, the University of Miami’s School of Business ranks No. 1 in Florida and No. 21 nationwide, which is quite remarkable.
Between 2014 and 2023, schools in the Southeastern Conference (SEC)—including the University of Alabama, Auburn University, University of Georgia, and Ole Miss—saw a 91% spike in undergraduate enrollment from the Northeast, according to government data cited by the Sunday Times.
The University of South Carolina (USC) has experienced a 90% increase in enrollment over the same period. With a 58% rise in out-of-state enrollment in the last decade, USC is on track to enroll more than 40,000 students in 2025, many from New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
Scott Virgil, the director of undergraduate admissions at USC, praised the school for its favorable weather, vibrant school culture, and strong academic programs. “We offer significant value to Northeastern students looking for a high return on investment,” he said.
Senior Sean Carroll at USC echoed similar sentiments, mentioning the university’s solid academic programs and engaging sports atmosphere. “A variety of things drew me to the University of South Carolina, and I am grateful every day for my decision,” he noted.
