Jets focus on the 'long-term' under Aaron Glenn with another confirmed losing season

Jets’ Rebuilding Efforts Amidst Struggles

“What do you think about the Jets’ foundation? What does it take to rebuild the franchise?”

Harrison Phillips took a moment to consider this question early Monday morning.

The defensive tackle, now in his eighth season in the NFL, finds himself facing circumstances quite different from his time with the Bills and the Vikings.

For those new to the Jets, including Phillips, it’s clear that they were stepping into a challenging situation, one that the franchise has seen too often. It’s notable that first-year coach Aaron Glenn has yet to encounter this level of struggle during his previous eight years with the organization.

The Jets suffered a 23-10 defeat against the Ravens on Sunday, marking their ninth loss this season, which extends their streak to ten consecutive losing seasons. To shift gears for the future, they need to display some improvement in the remaining six games of the season, all while continuing the quest to develop a winning culture.

This scenario puts the Jets back in a familiar place: working to instill winning habits throughout a challenging season.

For newcomers like Phillips and Glenn, navigating this difficult cycle serves as a true test. Phillips, who graduated from Stanford and was drafted in the third round in 2018, has seen only two losing seasons—one each in Buffalo and Minnesota—before joining the Jets. However, he had never dealt with a 2-9 record before. His rookie year with the Bills saw him finish at 2-7, but he bounced back impressively the following season with a 10-6 record.

Phillips noted some concerns about the Jets’ sense of identity but maintained his belief in the team. He recalled an encouraging speech he delivered at a team meeting prior to their first win against the Bengals in Week 8. “When I spoke to the team earlier this year, I emphasized the importance of a long-term mindset. I told them, ‘You might beat me today or tomorrow, but in the end, you’re not going to beat me. You need that relentless drive,’” he shared.

He also reminded teammates of how close they’ve been during many of their losses, like when Breece Hall fumbled at the Ravens’ 2-yard line in the critical fourth quarter when they were down 20-10.

Phillips underscored that one needs mental toughness to play the long game, but it’s equally important to realize that the turnaround might not be as far off as it appears. This season has indeed been rough for the Jets, especially with Glenn starting his tenure with a franchise-record six consecutive losses. Unfortunately, this trend has only enhanced his connection to the team’s 10-game losing streak and the worst start since their 0-11 beginning in 2020.

Despite all this, Glenn is seen as a source of hope within the organization, and new hires are expected to play a key role in navigating the team toward a more promising future.

“Everyone wants to win right now, but don’t lose sight of what you’re aiming to build,” Glenn remarked. “I’m focusing on that while also trying to win games, developing our players and our staff. It’s about establishing the right foundation for sustained success.”

“It’s tough. It’s tough. It’s tough. But we maintain a positive mindset… and we have a clear vision of where we’re heading,” he added.
