Washington, D.C. Mayor Bowser Won’t Seek Fourth Term
Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C. has made a surprising decision: she won’t run for a fourth term. This announcement came through several posts, where she shared her thoughts.
“My term ends on January 2, 2027, but until then, let’s finish the tape and keep winning for DC,” she expressed in her statement.
“It has been the honor of my life to be your mayor. Together, we have built a legacy of success that I am incredibly proud of. With gratitude, I would like to announce that I will not seek a fourth term,” she shared on social media.
Shortly after her written announcement, Bowser participated in an interview where she elaborated on her decision. “It’s time to pass the baton to the next leaders who will take our city to the next level,” she mentioned. She admitted that this was “the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” Bowser also conveyed a sense of accomplishment, believing she has effectively completed her objectives over her decade-long tenure. She pointed out the city’s key achievements, like significant housing developments and economic advancements, noting that focusing on economic growth will be her priority for the rest of her time in office.
Throughout her time as mayor, tensions with President Trump were particularly pronounced, especially after his public criticisms regarding her handling of Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. During that period, Bowser renamed two blocks in D.C., prominently displaying “Black Lives Matter Plaza” in front of the White House at taxpayer expense.
However, after Trump secured re-election in 2024, Bowser visited him at Mar-a-Lago, describing their meeting as “amazing.” This seemed to suggest the possibility of mending their relationship. Yet, soon after, the dynamics shifted again when Trump decided to send the National Guard to Washington, D.C.
